UNAIR NEWS – Another achievement made by Mohammad Wahyu Syafi’ul Mubarok, UNAIR Physics undergraduate student. After participating in various national and international academic competitions, the student from Lamongan did not feel complacent quickly. He has left for Melaka a while ago for his brilliant ideas.

Wahyu was invited to attend the International Conference on Youth, Ocean and Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 14, along with 100 youths from 17 other countries. The event was held on July 1-5, 2019 at Ames Hotel, Melaka and attended by participants from various backgrounds, from undergraduate students, master or master students, professionals, the United Nations Council (UN), Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) to government representation.

The event was organized by the World Youth Foundation, one of the NGOs under the United Nations focusing on developing youth resources globally. Each participant presented their ideas, carried out capacity building training, and discussion.

Wahyu said the focus of the discussion was about how to keep marine ecosystems sustainable even amid pollution and climate change. He also wrote a project draft as the selection requirement.

“So I wrote a brief paper, trying to discuss carbon-related trade between Indonesia and China to realize SDG 14, live below water,” he said.

The idea came up when he tried to examine the carbon problems in China. Indonesia, he continued, has rainforests that are the most significant carbon dioxide absorber while China is an industrial country, one of the largest carbon producers in the world. He also promoted an idea of cooperation between the two countries.

“To follow the Paris Agreement, an agreement in Paris 2015 concerning carbon production, they need to buy carbon absorbers to maintain carbon production limits, in this case, Indonesia’s forests. Finally, there is an opportunity for cooperation, “said Wahyu.

After the conference, the participants also conducted beach cleaning activities at Siring Beach, Melaka collaborating with Trash Man NGO from Malaysia. Then, it was closed with a city tour in the Historical City of Melaka. Wahyu also shared his memorable experience during the activity.

“The most memorable thing was when I could expand the network with delegates from other countries. Learn about the simplicity of Nepalese people, learn critical thinking of Chinese people, learn the warmth of Malaysian culture, and many others, “Wahyu said.

There were five delegates from Indonesia, one student from UNAIR, three from IPB, and one from an NGO in Bali. Wahyu’s English English skills were honed well during the event. In five days of his involvement, the event improved his English.

“It is exciting that I could collaborate with brilliant young people from all over the world to formulate a movement or a solution to preserve the earth in the future,” he stated. (*)
