UNAIR NEWS – Center for Anti-Corruption & Criminal Policy of Faculty of Law (FH) of Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) in collaboration with Transparency International Indonesia held a public discussion entitled Capturing Prospective Leaders with Integrity. The public discussion was held on Wednesday Junw19 in Room 301, Kahuripan Building, UNAIR Management Office.

There were Dr. Mualimin Abdi, SH, MH (KPK Chancellor), Dadang Trisasongko (Transparency International Indonesia), and Iman Prihandono, SH., MH., LL.M., Ph.D. (Head of Conflict of Interest Prevention and Control Committee). The activity was opened directly by UNAIR Rector Prof. Dr. Mohammad Nasih, SE., MT., Ak.

“The effect of corruption is terrible because it spreads. Funds that can actually be used to improve education overcome unemployment and development of underdeveloped regions are misused. Therefore,  the selection committee of KPK leadership candidates that have been formed can determine an excellent figure to lead KPK, ” he said.

While on May 17, 2019, President Jokowi issued a Decree of President of Republic of Indonesia Number 54 / P Year 2019 concerning the establishment of a Selection Committee (Pansel) for Candidates for Head of Corruption Eradication Commission. Head KPK is tasked with selecting the best Citizens of the Republic of Indonesia to become KPK leaders in 2019-2023.

In the discussion, the three speakers emphasized the importance of leadership that must be owned by the elected KPK Leaders. This leadership spirit greatly determines the professionalism of KPK’s work.

KPK has placed a particular position because it is legally independent in handling corruption cases. KPK is allowed to conduct tapping without having to ask permission from the Court. Seeing this potential, the most important thing is how KPK processes its performance.

Dadang Trisasongko said that in international corruption conference, clarification of KPK is currently being awaited by many countries. This was due to public support for KPK so that the legitimacy of KPK became strong and then appreciated by the international community.

“KPK is like a sharp knife. In order for these sharp blades, we need KPK leaders who can manage the institution, “he added.

The importance of leadership spirit possessed by elected KPK leaders aims to maintain the existence of KPK to be stronger. The community has seen KPK as a trusted institution.

“The thing we need to realize is there will be a lot of challanges. Therefore, we need KPK leaders who have strong leadership, “said Dr. Mualimin ended the public discussion. (*)
