UNAIR NEWS – The deaths of polling station working committee (KPPS) officials has been a trending topic to discuss lately. This tragedy surprised the public. The party of democracy that should bring about change took its toll. There were 527 KPPS officials died on duty.

A public discussion held by Universitas Airlangga Student Executive Board (BEM) on Wednesday, May 22, 2019, was attended by Ucu Martanto S.IP., MA. The FISIP UNAIR political science lecturer explained his views related to KPPS tragedy.

According to Ucu, all matters related to the election and the officials are regulated by the law. However, the existing regulations were not enough to anticipate external impacts. This external impact occurs because the polling and counting process was long.

“One of the other causes is the lack of youngsters’ interest to support and make the election successful. If we pay attention, most of the officials who supported this year’s election were already elderly, “Ucu said.

Older KPPS officials mostly have poor quality health. However, they are still employed because no younger people are coming down to help. Ucu hoped that General Election Commission (KPU) could address this matter doing more dissemination.

“Dissemination could be a solution, so there will be more young people, especially students who are moved, to play an active role in the election implementation,” Ucu explained.

Besides the lack of support from the younger generation, inadequate health exam also became one of the essential factors for this tragedy to happen. Health exams are essential to ensure that the personnel on duty are physically and spiritually capable. Unfortunately, in various regions, there are still many KPPS that passed the selection without a qualified health exam.

“Because most registrants were elderly, the amount would have been shrinking if a health exam was held. Therefore, there were still many registrants who pass without passing an adequate health exam, “Ucu said.

Ucu hoped that students would be more active in supporting the election, especially in the midst of political tensions heating up lately. With more youngsters playing active roles, he hoped, this tragedy will not be repeated in the future.

Regarding this tragedy, a public discussion has been held in FK UNAIR’s anatomy room. This event presented speakers from the fields of politics and health. Furthermore, BEM UNAIR also released a statement demanding KPU to fix the system and investigate this case. (*)
