UNAIR NEWS – Nur Sophia Matin and Nail Firah Zada FR, Midwifery students of Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Airlangga (FK UNAIR) won 1st place in scientific essay competition, Medical Djogdja Scientific Competition (Medjonson) 2019 on Saturday, April 27 at Yogyakarta. The competition was held by Medical Research and Science Club (MARS) Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta.

In her story, Sophia said 10 team in preliminary round were chosen to present their work in final round. The finalists came from various universities in Indonesia. Among them were Universitas Indonesia, Universitas Andalas, Universitas Jember, Universitas Islam Indonesia, Universitas Brawijaya, dan Universitas Airlangga.

With the theme of Pediatric Disease: Better Stage of Health Starts from Pediatric Care. Sophia and Nail wrote down the idea of early childhood growth monitoring and development platforms. The number of toddlers in Indonesia who experience developmental delays lies behind the selection of these ideas.

According to Sophia, the parameters of child development should be known by parents. Later, parents can evaluate the development of toddlers independently.

“Parents need to know the warning signs of child development,” she said.

Age 0-5 years is the period that determines the future life of children (Golden Period). The development of language skills, creativity, social awareness, emotional, and intelligence developed very rapidly in this period.

If it is known early, the causes of delay can be immediately sought and handled early by making appropriate interventions. Without rapid and appropriate intervention, the next age will be the cause of further developmental delays.

“This platform is expected to be a medium for parents in early detection of toddler growth,” she said.

Sophia and Nail hoped this platform can be immediately refined and utilized by parents who have toddlers. Hopefully, it will improve the quality of children growth in Indonesia.

“Knowing that other finalists presentation were amazing. God willing, I hope this idea can be truly implemented and useful for the community.” she added. (*)
