GEN Corps FKp UNAIR Holds Mangrove Planting in Mangrove Forest Gunung Anyar Surabaya

UNAIR NEWS – Green Nursing Corps (GEN Corps) Faculty of Nursing (FKp) UNAIR as one of student organizations engaged in environmental assessment, celebrated 2019 earth day by planting 500 mangrove in Mangrove Forest Gunung Anyar Surabaya on Saturday, April 20.

The event was attended by Dr. Kusnanto, S.Kp., M.Kes, as Vice Dean 1 of FKp UNAIR. There were undergraduate and master’s degree students, FKp UNAIR student organizations namely BEM, BLM, and SKINers, as well as nature lovers organizations such as FK UNAIR KPLA, Pataka FH UNAIR, WANALA UNAIR, Nikkapala PPNS, and PLH SIKLUS ITS.

Tirta Rizki, the person in charge of the activity explained the action of planting mangroves is a manifestation of GEN Corps’s concern and commitment to the environment and maintain the preservation of nature. Apart from its vision as an environmental assessor, this activity is expected to be an effort to prevent tsunami and abrasion.

“I hope this activity can be used as an effort to prevent tsunamis and abrasion,” he said.

Mutiara Citra, Head of GEN Corps FKp UNAIR said the theme of 2019 Earth Day was “Protect Our Species” to preserve the nature.

“Earth Day is an annual event marked throughout the world to show support for environmental protection and encourage people to preserve the nature” explained Mutiara Citra.

Vice Dean 1 of FKp UNAIR, Dr. Kusnanto S.Kp., M.Kes., highly appreciated the mangrove planting carried out by FKp students. “Planting mangroves is an effort that can be done by humans to keep the existence of the earth and its environment.” he said.

The event began with a speech as well as a brief remarks from Ms. Anik as the manager of Mangrove Forest Gunung Anyar Surabaya. In addition, the type of mangrove is Rhizophora mucronata. This type, he said, is most commonly found in tidal areas and suitable in smooth muddy terrain.

“In addition, it have efficient supporting roots to protect the soil in coastal areas, so that it can become an abrasion barrier and protector of soil erosion due to water,” he explained.

This mangrove planting program was not only beneficial for the natural environment but also for human. Every leaf that grows from mangrove planting will produce oxygen which is needed by humans. In addition the roots as an abrasion barrier, the surrounding community also uses the fruit can be processed into food or drinks from Wonorejo. (*)
