UNAIR NEWS – Faculty of Law (FH) students Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) who are members of Airlangga Yuris Muda Community (MYMA) in contributing the name of the campus on  national scene. This time, they gave achievements in legal debate.

In previous year of MYMA, the organization managed to get 8 achievement in legal debate competition, this year MYMA made an achievement in constitutional debate competition held by Eastern Regional Constitutional Court. The competition was held on 11-13 April.

FH UNAIR debate team was represented by 5 students: Sayyidatul Insiyah (2016), Xavier Nugraha (2015), and Shevierra Danmadiyah (2016) as speakers and, Jihan Anjania Aldi (2016) and Elma Putri Tanbun (2016) as the researcher. In participating in the competition, they were accompanied by a supervisor lecturer Dri Utari, S.H., LLM.

The XII constitutional debate competition held by Constitutional Court was divided into three regions. Western, Central and Eastern Regions. Eight of the best teams from each region will participating in national round.

In this case, UNAIR entered Eastern Region along with several excellent universities, such as Universitas Brawijaya, Universitas Hasanuddin, Universitas Jember, Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang, Universitas Surabaya, and several other Eastern Regional universities.

In Debate Competition for XII Constitution of Eastern Region, there were several round. First, selection round, where participants are required to make essays and videos. At this selection stage 24 best teams from Eastern Region were choosen based on essay and video assessments.

After 24 best teams were selected, the debate phase continued, UNAIR team compete with 24 best teams at Universitas Samratulangi, Manado, as the partner of Constitutional Court in holding XII constitutional debate competition in Eastern Region.

At selection round, UNAIR was ranked first, followed by Sunan Ampel Surabaya UIN, Universitas Brawijaya, Universitas Hasanuddin, Universitas Khairun, Universitas Mataram, and Universitas Islam Negeri Alauddin Makassar.

In preliminary round, UNAIR team was in one chamber with team from Universitas Udayana and Universitas Negeri Gorontalo. Moreover, UNAIR team succeeded in defeating both universities with victory point of 3 vs 0.

In quarter-finals, UNAIR team made it through to the top 4 after defeating Universitas Mataram team. While in round 4, UNAIR team faced the host team, Universitas Sam Ratulangi with the topic of “Forced Summoning Efforts by House of Representatives (DPR)” in a contra  position.

With hard work of speakers, researchers, and the right strategies of supervisors, UNAIR team participated into the final round with victory points of 4 vs 1.

In final round, UNAIR team faced Ubaya which was ranked 2nd. The topic was “Legal Standing of Foreigners in Testing the Law” in pro position.

By capitalizing on team cohesiveness and the right strategy, UNAIR team won a final match with victory points 5 vs 4. Thus, UNAIR team won Constitution Debate XII at Eastern Regional round.

Xavier Nugraha as head of delegation felt proud and happy to bring back the name of alma mater, even though he had to go through a long process.

“It is a pride for us in contributing the name of almamater and  make our parents proud, even though we have to be quarantined for three weeks” he said.

He was also grateful for being supported by various parties. Starting from Dean, Vice Dean, lecturers, MYMA organization to become winner in Eastern Regional XII Constitution Debate.

Furthermore, Xavier also continues to ask for prayers and support, thus UNAIR team could win XII National Constitution Debate which will be held on August 14-16 2019. (*)
