UNAIR NEWS – Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) Universitas Airlangga held a guest lecture with the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) to ASEAN, H.E. Huang Xilian as the speaker on Thursday, April 11, 2019. The guest lecture held in Adi Sukadana Room Building A FISIP UNAIR was on “China and ASEAN: Together for Vision 2030”.
In his presentation, Huang explained about the plan to strengthen partnership between China and ASEAN in the future. As we all know, PRC established bilateral partnerships with ASEAN in 1991, when it was invited as consultative members at ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur. After nearly three decades, the relationship between China and ASEAN has strengthened.
This was evidenced by the increase in trade volume between China and ASEAN countries by 14.1 percent in 2018. In addition, there was also an increase in exchange of visits between ASEAN citizens and China.
“The latest data from Chinese Customs Administration shows that two-way trade between China and ASEAN grew by 14.1 percent to a record US $ 587.87 billion in 2018, compared to 2017,” Huang said.
As a bridge and liaison, the PRC’s mission to ASEAN is to improve exchanges and cooperation, as well as increasing the trust and friendship between China and ASEAN countries, as well as contributing to China-ASEAN sustainable development.
In the guest lecture he also conveyed the proposal of President Xi Jinping to forge a higher level of PRC-ASEAN strategic partnership for the development of bilateral relation. So, at 21st PRC-ASEAN Summit in November last year, the two parties issued the 2030 RRT-ASEAN Strategic Partnership Vision which sets a medium and long term plan of future cooperation.
“The meeting then gave birth to the New Vision 2030 concept, otherwise known as 5P ( 5 Partnership ) concept, Partnership for common development, Partnership for peace, Partnership for opening and win-win cooperation, Partnership for entrepreneurship and innovation, and Partnership for inclusiveness and mutual learning,” said Huang.
In the end, Huang stressed that the partnership between ASEAN and China is an important and dynamic relationship. It can improve the level of trust between both parties (ASEAN and China). Huang also hoped that the products of PRC-ASEAN collaboration will be able to improve people’s welfare, and they can be able to share more data sources, technology and science. (*)
