UNAIR NEWS – As one of the proofs of Higher Education Tri Dharma implementation, Environmental Engineering Student Association (HMTL), Faculty of Science and Technology, Universitas Airlangga carries out Community Service through ‘hmtlngabdi’. The activity was held in Karang Tembok Surabaya village, opened on Saturday, March 30, 2019.

The activity of ‘hmtlngabdi’ was opened by head of neighboring unit (RT) and the head of HMTL followed by a feast. This is a form of ‘hmtlngabdi’ committee’ gratitude to the local community. Because the community has given HMTL an opportunity to hold community services in Karang Tembok Village.

“Aside from being Higher Education Tri Dharma implementation, this ‘hmtlngabdi’ activity is also a place for Environmental Engineering students to channel knowledge to the community, through ‘ecobrick’ counseling to the community collaborating with Kampoeng Djoeang,” said Fauzan as one of the committee

‘Ecobrick’ itself, he explained, is plastic waste that is no longer used and then cut into small pieces and put into plastic bottles to make strong building blocks. With this, he hopes that ‘Ecobrick’ counseling can reduce plastic waste in Karang Tembok Village.

“Because plastic itself is a waste that is very difficult to decompose and requires long time to decompose, that the use of plastic from day to day is also increasing,” continued Fauzan.

Besides, he added, the activity was also packed with games for the women of Karang Tembok Village. All people from children to adults cheered to encourage some of the mothers who took part in the competition.

‘hmtlngabdi activity can provide a solution to the environmental problems that exist in Karang Tembok Village. Not only that, we also hope that this activity will also continue for several times in one year, “he concluded. (*)
