History Alumnus Discusses Historical Journey of Bonek and Persebaya

UNAIR NEWS –History Studies, Faculty of Humanities (FIB) Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) hosted scientific oration on Wednesday March 13, 2019. The event, which was intended for history students as commemoration of 21st Anniversary of History.

One of the speaker, Rojil Nugroho Bayu Aji, S. Hum., M.A. alumnus of History Studies in UNAIR and lecturer in History Education at Universitas Negeri Surabaya (UNESA). Rojil is also known as a history activist and observer of Persebaya Surabaya.

In the scientific oration, Rojil shared his experiences during his time as student. Rojil said that his success as a lecturer was inseparable from his lecturers who had guided him. Rojil story was a motivation for students before starting the oration.

Rojil gave material about Persebaya and Bonek Surabaya. The theme was presented in urban history approach and Bonek became one of the characteristic of Surabaya.

“In adittion, infrastructure development has become a basic physical with facilities services for the economy to function properly.” said Rojil.

“The infrastructure can be in the form of highways, railroads, airports, irrigation, dams, buildings and other buildings,” he added.

Bonek can be said as the first and largest modern supporter in Indonesia. Since 1987, Bonek has formed an organization in awaydays (playing in the opponent’s cage, ed) supporting Persebaya through Tret Tet Tet method. It was Bonek cultural product to support their favorite team competing outside Surabaya.

During the program, Rojil explained that Bonek could be said as a second religion. “The study of urban history in the development of history will not be complete if it does not discuss the dynamics of sports, especially football and supporters,” said Rojil.

According to Rojil, there are currently several students and also historical researchers who pay attention to the history of sports. “It is (football, ed) that indeed rarely gets attention in the context of historical writing in Indonesia,” said Rojil. (*)
