UNAIR NEWS – Rector of Universitas Airlangga Prof. Dr. Mohammad Nasih, S.E., M.T., Ak., CMA., encouraged young people, especially students, to monitor the simultaneous election in April 2019. Furthermore, youth were encouraged to vote after knowing the profile of the legislative candidates, their political parties.

It was conveyed by Prof. Nasih in Catatan Najwa Surabaya Roadshow activities at Airlangga Convention Center (ACC), Campus C UNAIR, on Friday afternoon, Feb 1 2019. In the middle of talk show, Prof. Nasih also made comments on how youth should behave for the political year, for the simultaneous election on April 17.

“Young people (students, ed) should use the momentum of the election to determine the future of the nation to the better direction,” he said.

“One of them is by choosing the best representative by knowing in details the ins and outs of the election participants. Knowing the performance and track record and young people are expected to be smart voters, ” he added.

Prof. Nasih reminded that Indonesia’s future in the next five years will be determined in this year’s election. Please note, based on Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Indonesia is heading towards a demographic bonus condition. The percentage of people in their productive age will reach around 60 percent of the total population in 2035.

Furthermore, based on Kompas.com, December 15, 2017, Ministry of Home Affairs recorded an additional 7 million new voters in April 2019 were 17 years old. It means the votes of youth are important and dominant.

Therefore, Prof. Nasih said that the votes of young people must be used very well. It is time for youth to pay attention to the five-year celebration, 2019 Election. Aside from being a form of contribution to building on Indonesia’s progress, such attention has become an effort to monitor the occurrence of illegal practices. The goal is to have more mature and developed democracy in Indonesia.

In addition, the closeness of today’s youth to the world of technology and digital must be directed at improving the quality of democracy in Indonesia. For example, reducing the spread of fake news on social media, spread optimism on the progress of the nation, including narrating the election well so a positive vibe to vote is there.

In Catatan Najwa Talk Show, there were a number of legislative candidates from parties in 2019 Election such as Guntur Romli from Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI); Johan Budi from Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP); Fandi Utomo from National Awakening Party (PKB); Vena Melinda from National Democratic Party (Nasdem); Imelda Sari from Democratic Party; Djamal Azis from Gerindra Party; Priyo Budi Santoso from Working Party; and Viva Yoga from National Mandate Party (PAN).

The presence of these legislative candidates is expected to provide a different perspective on 2019 Election especially providing a reference and description to voters, students, in using their political rights. (*)
