FKM Transfer Student in Waste Management and Suroboyo Bus Introduction

UNAIR NEWS – Twelve students from Faculty of Public Health (FKM) Universitas Airlangga held field work practices (PKL) in Ampel Village, Semampir District Surabaya. The activities in Santri Taat program (Protected Sanitation, Healthy Enviroment) held on January 2, 2019 until January 5, 2019.

The location was chosen due to waste management problem in there. Moreover, diarrheal disease is the main problem in the area. There were at least three activities in this program to increase capacity and empower the community to create clean and healthy life behaviors (PHBS).

These activities included the implementation of Capacity Building for the community and youth organization (karang taruna) about hygienic latrines and composting from household waste training. Last but not least, HAI TAYO activities implementation (Hai, Tabung sAmpah YOk).

Akhmad Abu Khanifah, coordinator of the activity said the process of organic waste, he and the team conducted training on composting using Takakura method. The activity was intended for the community in there.

Meanwhile, processing inorganic waste (HAI TAYO program) was intended for students from Early Childhood Education (PAUD) of PPT Kids Smile. The activity was carried out by collecting plastic waste in the surrounding area.

“We told the children that they can exchange their plastic bottle for a ticket ride of Suroboyo Bus,” he added.

The introduction of Suroboyo Bus brought a great enthusiasm to all of the children. Moreover, it was their first time riding the bus. In one week of saving plastic bottle,  PAUD children  can go accros Surabaya with this Bus.

“We hope the community and stakeholders can run this program and improve its quality,” he said.

On the other hand, Fatimah, PAUD of PPT Kids Smile teacher said that she was happy with the result of this PKL group. In fact, all of residents also want to ride Suroboyo Bus.

“For students, thank you for teaching us regarding to healthy enviroment. It’s useful for us” she concluded. (*)
