UNAIR NEWS – For her Master’s degree, Suhailah Hayaza or Ella managed to get a Master’s Towards Doctorate for Superior Bachelor (PMDSU) scholarship from the Higher Education ministry. With the scholarship, Ella is required to complete her Masters within 1.5 to 2 years.

“Thank God, I can answer these demand by graduating within 14 months,” said the student of Biology Program.

According to Ella, receiving a PMDSU scholarship was not easy. Moreover, S2 students at Universitas Airlangga are also required to have an iternational publication of at least 1 paperThe hardest moment Ella had experienced was when she sat in the second semester. At that time she had to analyze the results of the, prepare a thesis exam, and write a paper for publication in less than two months.

” It was crazy, but totally worth itHopefully the results will not betray the efforts,  Ella explained.

The thesis written by Ella was entitled Activation of Anti-Cancer of Okra Polysaccharide (Abelmoschus esculentus L) based on Huh7it Liver Cancer Cell Growth and Apoptosis and In Vitro Activation of Natural Killer Cells. The thesis discusses the effects of okra plant extract, in this case extract of raw polysaccharide against liver cancer cells in the form of Huh7it cell culture.

Ella hoped that the extract can work well as an anticancer agent, by doing an inhibition on the growth of the cancer itself as well as improving the performance of the immune system of non-cancer cells.

“Subhanallah, the results were very interesting and God’s willing, this topic will continue for my dissertation later,” she said.

Although focusing on lectures and research, Ella also took the time to help the parents’ embroidery business. In addition, she actively participates in seminars or scientific conferences at home and abroad. In early November, Ela left for Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to present the results of her research at a symposium held by Universiti Malaya.

“I am also an affiliate member of the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) which is part of UNESCO,  she said.

Ella is currently preparing PMDSU’s first year end report to be given to the Higher Education ministry and Test for S3 qualifications. In the future, Ella hoped to get a PhD. (*)
