Reno Albra’s Experience on YSEALI Academic Fellowship, USA

UNAIR NEWS – Reno Albra, UNAIR Management student batch 2014, continues to make achievement. Previously, he won a full scholarship achievement at Fontys International Business School, Netherlands and several other scholarships. Now, this Airlangga Knight was one of Young South East Asia Leadership Initiative (YSEALI) participant, Academic Fellowship-Economic Development.

The scholarship was given by US Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, which led him to experience Brown University, United States. Reno revealed that his first impression of Brown University as one of the best campuses in the world was an amazing experience for him.

“Brown University gave me new insight and enthusiasm. Moreover, the classical architecture provides a unique experience while I’m here.” said Reno.

As we know, Brown University is one of Ivy League member that has a high academic reputation in United States. Including, it also has the largest financial income on the world.

Along with 20 other participants, Reno took Thematic Class according to the theme of Economic Development from morning to evening, he sat in class and joined regular class. In particular, Reno gained a deep understanding of strategic investment, analysis models, and Econometrics.

Reno explained that Brown University has open curriculum system. So, students don’t register as student faculty, but they can register as brown university students. Like Sit in Class program that YSEALI participant took. In here students are given the freedom to explore their potential in any faculty.

“With this system, there is no such thing as student picking wrong degree here. There are a lot of famous alumni from this university such as Nadiem Makarim as the CEO of Gojek and Jim Yong Kim as the Director of World Bank,” said Reno.

He also visited museums and took short program at Yale University and Harvard University. It became an unforgettable experience for him.

During the program, he said that even though Brown University is one of Ivy League member and the tuition fee are expensive, they still put away things after using them.

“Money can’t buy someone character. Even we lose our money,  our character is eternal, ” he said in the end. (*)
