The 3rd ICP-HESOS, Faculty of Psychology Discusses The Importance of Mental Health

UNAIR NEWS – One of the rising phenomena that happened lately was mental health issue. One of mental health cases that happened was stress according to IDN Times on 7 October 2018. The results of National College Health Assessment in 2014 showed that 33 percent of students experienced depression during their time on college.

It happened because of the pressure to finish lot of tasks. Unconsciously it implied that students were no longer healthy. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), health can be interpreted as a perfect condition of physical, mental health, and social life.

An individual is deemed healthy if they have an excellent condition of physical and psychological health. If someone felt healthy physically but his soul is not, then it can cause mental health problem.

Seeing all of these condition, Faculty of Psychology, Universitas Airlangga held 3rd International Conference on Psychology in Health, Educational, Social, and Organizational Settings (ICP-HESOS) on 16-18 November 2018. ICP-HESOS is a biennial international conference held by UNAIR and Zhejiang University supported by Indonesian Psychology Association (HIMPSI), University of Warsaw, University Utara Malaysia, and in collaboration with Psychofest 2018 (part of the BEM FPsi).

The theme for this event was “Improving Mental Health and Harmony in Global Community”. It was attended by more than 130 participants from various countries such asChina, Poland, Australia, Britain, Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia.

“Mental and community health (as theme) fit perfectly with society condition today. Where the presence of community has an important role in realizing mental health by creating harmony in community, “said Dr. Rahkman Ardi, Head of 3rd ICP-HESOS committee.

Dr. Rahkman explained in creating harmony, it has to be dynamic, specific, and flexible. Therefore, an up-to-date and intersectoral approach is needed.

In the conference, there were also various academics and practitioners. Some of them were Prof. Deborah Tumbull, Ph.D., from University of Adelaide; Prof. Dr. hab Przamyslaw Tomalski, MA, PhD from University of Warsaw; and Prof. Dr. Ma Jianhonng from Zhejang University.

Not only in the form of a conference presenting research result related to mental health, various workshops were also held, such as on Improving the Information Processing Capacity of Children with Autism by Using TEACCH Approach, Grow Yourself Through Love (Transpersonal Psychological Approach) in Excellence Hall with Morality FPsi, Campus B UNAIR.

“The ICP-HESOS series event also held a Gala Dinner at Surabaya Mayor Residence and closed with invited symposium and closing ceremony in Faculty of Psychology,” he said.

“The result of strategic meeting with Zhejiang University, they agreed to host 4th ICP-HESOS in Zhejiang University, China on 2020,” added Dr. Rahkman. (*)
