UNAIR NEWS – Public Health Program PSDKU UNAIR in Banyuwangi held a national seminar on disaster control in Indonesia. The event was held in the Minak Jinggo Hall on the 2nd Floor of the Banyuwangi Regency Government Building, Sunday 11 November.

The national seminar was featured with ‘Living on the ring of fire, are you ready?’ as the theme. This time, Anna Kurniati, S.KM., MA., Ph.D from Development and Empowerment Agency of Human Health Resources (BPPSDMK) Ministry of Health, Republic of Indonesia.

“The theme was interesting according to Indonesia’s current conditions. Almost all kind of disasters happen in Indonesia, from tsunamis, earthquakes, liquefaction, floods, even this new plane crash, it has become a concern for Indonesians today, “Anna said.

On that occasion, another speaker were Dr. Atik Choirul Hidayah, Dr., M.Kes as Head of Epidemiology Department, Faculty of Public Health UNAIR, Fajar Susana, S.H as the Head of Banyuwangi Regency Regional Disaster Management Agency (APBD) and Dr. M. Zainal Fatah, Drs., M.S., M.Kes as Head of Public Health Study Program of PSDKU UNAIR Banyuwangi.

The event was opened by A. A. Gde Satya Utama, S.E., M.Ak., S.Ak, PSDKU UNAIR Coordinating Secretary in Banyuwangi by gong beating activity. Then, the event continued with Gandrung Marsan Dance which was presented by students.

An interesting question came from one of the invited guests, Somadi, a teacher in SDN Model Banyuwangi who discussed social conflict disaster.

“It is really sad in this morning. In Surabaya there were 3 victims. Some of them fell and injured. In art field (referring to accidents in Surabaya Membara event, ed). Another things in sports field, there was a fight between supporters and someone died because of that. Is this also called a disaster? “Said Somadi.

Anna responded. If we are talking about disasters, sometimes it occurs due to ignorance.

“If you want to talk about training, you can ask to BPBD. When it comes to facing disaster directly, this will be individual experience. So, knowledge about disasters is necessary, “said Anna.

“Yesterday when the incident happened the BPBD, why they didn’t show up? Because it can referred as disaster if it causes a lot of casualties. Social conflict in Sampit War, for example. That’s when BPBD will show up, “Anna added.

The event was attended by 100 public health students and some of invited guests from Regional Development Planning Agency (Bapeda), Health Office, BPJS, and representatives from Banyuwangi District Government. (*)
