UNAIR NEWS – Faculty of Medicine Universitas Airlangga  (FK UNAIR) held an event titled 1 st International Scientific Meeting on Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ISM-CMD), 10th National Congress of Indonesian Society for Clinical Microbiology (KONAS PAMKI), and 12 th National Symposium of Indonesia Antimicrobial Resistance Watch (NS-IARW).

FK UNAIR collaborates with the Indonesian Clinical Microbiology Specialists Association (PAMKI) and Indonesia Antimicrobial Resistance Watch (IARW) to organize the event. Located at Bumi Surabaya Hotel, the event was held for two days, namely on Saturday and Sunday, October 13-14.

There were about 250 participants from various health and education institutions in Indonesia.

Various important figures in the event were the Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia, Prof. Dr. Nila Djuwita F. Moeloek, dr., Sp. M (K), Rector of Universitas Airlangga, Prof. Muhammad Nasih, S.E., M.T., Ak., CMA., Head of PAMKI, Prof. Dr. Kuntaman, dr. MS., Sp.MK(K), Directorate General of Healthcare Service, Ministry of Health, Secretary of Director General of Disease Prevention and Control, Ministry of Health, Head of Health Agency East Java, and the ranks of Faculty of Medicine.

In addition, the event also invited several international clinical microbiologists as speakers such as Prof. Fumito Aruyama, Ph.D, Manabu Ato, MD., Ph.D., Matsumoto Sokichi, Prof. Toshiro Shirakawa, and Prof. Kazufumi Shimizu, Ph.D., from Japan; Satheesh Thangaraj, Ph.D., from Singapore; and Juliette Severin, MD., Ph.D., from the Netherlands.

The event was opened with a speech by Dr. Eko Budi Koendhori, dr., M.Kes., Sp.MK (K), as the chief executive of the event, Prof. Dr. Kuntaman, dr., MS., Sp.MK (K), as the Head of PAMKI, Rector of UNAIR, Prof. Muhammad Nasih, and the Indonesian Minister of Health, Prof. Dr. Nila Djuwita F. Moeloek.

The event was opened by the Minister of Health by beating gong as symbolic.

The event entitled “Update on Management and Control of Infectious Disease in the Era of Antimicrobial Resistance”, was expected to provide relevant and useful information for the handling of infectious diseases, especially those caused by resistant microbes.

Dr. Eko Budi Koendhori said that antibiotic resistance has increased very rapidly, including in Indonesia. It happens when the use of antibiotics is not based on procedures and dosages recommended by the doctor.

“The event is expected to provide information and education to practitioners of clinical microbiology to create appropriate treatment strategies and reduce the emergence of antimicrobial resistance,” said Dr. Eko Budi.

Excessive and inappropriate use of antibiotics is a problem that can cause resistance, side effects, allergic reactions, or even cause new diseases.

This decade, antibiotic resistance is referred as a global health problem. The use of antibiotics has broader consequences than ordinary drugs. When someone misuses antibiotics, it will actually lead to the creation of microbes that are resistant to antibiotics and other drugs. So it can lead to new infections and will be difficult to treat.

This event was the first FK UNAIR’s international meeting on microbiology issues, and was held simultaneously with the tenth national congress of PAMKI and the 12th IARW national symposium.

Previously, there was a workshop on diphtheria, disease prevention and control, which was held at FK UNAIR on Thursday-Friday, October 11-12.

In addition, there was also an exhibition of laboratory and health equipment, poster from symposium participants, and medical batik exhibition. (*)
