UNAIR NEWS – As the youngest faculty of Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), Faculty of Fisheries and Marine (FPK) continues its efforts to improve the quality of its lecturers, staff, and students. One of these efforts was realized in the International Conference of Fisheries and Marine Science (InCoFiMS) for the first time on Saturday, October 6 entitled ” Fisheries and Marine in Supporting Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement ” .

There were three keynote speakers from three countries in Asia, Prof. Kazuhiko Koike ( Graduate School of Biosphere Science Hiroshima University, Japan ); Prof. Hyun-Woo Kim ( Department of Marine Biology at Pukyong National University, South Korea ); and Dr. Ir. Slamet Soebjakto, M.Si ( General Director of Aquaculture Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Republic of Indonesia ).

Head of the Committee Dr. Woro Hastuti Satyantini, Ir., M.Si. in the conference explained that the selection of the theme was inspired by the development of fisheries, such as issues on global changes, climate changes, as well as the mandate of the Minister of  Maritime Affairs that Indonesia is a global maritime axis and we must protect it.

One effort to realize that is to improve the quality of Indonesian human resources, especially UNAIR academicians through the international conference on fisheries and marine affairs.

“Indonesia is rich in marine biological resources so we must protect it. How do we look after it? One of them is through arrests from the existing signs. To support our protein needs, we don’t just catch it, there must be aquaculture activities , “he said.

“In addition to cultivation, we must pay attention to the environment. Because, it is possible that from the aquaculture activities we dispose some waste. So, we must manage the waste, we manage it so it would not damage the environment, “added Dr. Woro.

Meanwhile, Prof. Mochammad Amin Alamsjah, Ir., M.Sc., Ph.D. as the Vice Rector III UNAIR in his speech said that the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) are very important for Indonesia. Because, Indonesia is one of the countries committed to achieve SDGs.

“Fisheries and Maritime Affairs are the right sector to reach SDGs, considering 60 percent of Indonesia is water (sea, ed). Since Indonesia was declared the global maritime axis. We hope that this conference will be able to improve the quality of our performance, maintain the quality of our environmental and maritime resources, develop our socio-economic community, and discover new potentials from the fisheries and marine fields which are important for human life, “explained Prof. Amin.

Dr. Woro said that as a forum for exchanging information and technology in the field of fisheries, the international conference was as an effort to assist UNAIR lecturers and students, especially FPK academics in publishing scientific papers on international proceedings indexed by international databases (Web of Science, Scopus). At the conference, the committee also collaborate with a publisher indexed by Scopus to publish the proceedings of the conference.

“I hope that the conference can be scheduled in a regular manner in the future and improvements will be made from the results of evaluation of today’s activities,” concluded by Dr. Woro. (*)
