UNAIR NEWS – Sidotopo Jaya is one of densely populated areas in Semampir Subdistrict, Northern Surabaya. This region is known for its negative image related to drug problems and crime. A research showed that in this area there have been drug problems up to 13-24 cases / year.
It is also felt in the area of Sidotopo Jaya, the people tend to have bad habits and even deviant. This is reflected in the habits of youth and children in the region. A head of neighborhood community revealed that activities conducted by teenagers and children there tend to be unuseful.
This is justified by Fia, one of the members of local youth association. According to Fia, teenagers and children in her area spend much of their free time with “cangkruk” in coffee shops. From there she suspects the teenagers are carried away in a deviant direction.
From this problem, four students of Universitas Airlangga, Achmad Rizki, Fauziah Silvana Putri, Puput Ayu Ramadhani, and Wahyu Perdana in the Community Student Creativity Program (PKMM) team developed a learning tool called “OSCAR” or Creative Reading Post for adolescents and children in RT 05.
The proposal of Achmad Rizki and friends passed the selection of Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education so they get developmental fund from Kemenristekdikti in PKM 2017-2018.
Achmad Riski as the head of the team explained, his team built reading oost with the support of the local youth. The reading post organized programs as a treatment to change the habit.
“With the program titled ‘OSCAR’ (Creative Reading Post) this is our intention as an effort to change the habits of children and youth through the implementation of reading literacy in Sidotopo Jaya Surabaya,” said Achmad Riski.
In essence, Oscar is a program designed as a treatment to change habits through the implementation of literacy, such as creative literacy. This program wants to encourage the readers do what they have read, such as making crafts, making papers, and so on.
“So this program can also be used as an attraction for youth and children to come to the place of learning and utilize the Oscar facility. In the future we hope the youth and children can focus in the post, “added Achmad Rizki. (*)
