UNAIR NEWS – Rizqi Zumar has enjoyed seeing world-renowned Imams video since childhood.He was given choices by his father whether to go to college while staying in an Islamic institution or while being activists of mosque. He is now a young imam of Nuruzzaman Mosque Campus B Universitas Airlangga.
Interviewed by UNAIR NEWS on Saturday, June 2, the student of Islamic Economics class 2015, recounted his journey to become the young imam of Nuruzzaman Mosque, Campus B UNAIR. It was begun with being a member of the Department of Mosque Prosperity (DKM), he said that he is involved the selection of young imam as well as gives example how to become imam in Nuruzzaman Mosque.
“I was a muadzin before at Nuruzzaman Mosque and when the imam was unavailable I was also given the responsibility to replace the imam. So it is appointed to give example to the participants, “he added.
Zumar said that announcement of the selection stated two names qualified to become young imams, one was himself. However, due to his colleague busy schedule, Zumar eventually be an imam more often in the mosque Nuruzzaman. The student from Kediri has been a muadzin as well as young imam starting from the third semester.
“This is also an advice from ustadz in Baitul Hikmah Student Islamic Institution to preach in the campus environment as well,” he added.
In addition to be UNAIR student, Zumar is also a student at Student Islamic institution (pesma) Baitul Hikmah. After several times rejected to enter pesma due to miss registration period, but thanks to his tenacity and sincerity Zumar is finally able to study religion in the pesma.
“After being told that I was accepted as a pesma student, that night I went from Gresik to pesma with only one bag of clothes,” he added.
Zumar claimed his current activities are divided into three, being a student, a santri (Islamic institution student), and participating in taking care of Nuruzzaman mosque through DKM.
“Besides adzan and imam, in Nuruzzaman Mosque I also help the management to prepare the sermon necessities, iftar, take care of procurement of goods and mosque facilities, and so on,” he said.
Zumar admitted that he has a serious responsibility. He has capable physically, but in terms of consistency, he said that it is difficult to be consistent. Zumar also said, it is a lesson for him to keep improving himself.
“With this young imam system, hopefully it can be a motivation for other young imam candidates. Usually the elderly is the active ones in the mosque, either imam or the congregation, but now is the time for the youth to shine in campus, “he concluded.
