UNAIR NEWS – After going through various preparations, Undergraduate Program of Midwifery Education Faculty of Medicine Universitas Airlangga has welcomed an accreditation visitation of ASEAN University Network-Quality Assurance (AUN-QA).

The arrival of Prof. Dr. Marilou G. Nicolas from University of Philiphines and Mrs. Siriluck Kiewkong from Mahidol University were welcomed by Dean of Faculty of Medicine UNAIR, Head of USI FK UNAIR, along with Midwifery Education Program Team of FK UNAIR, in Assembly Room A FK UNAIR, Tuesday, February 13. The assessment will be held for three days, on February 13-15 at FK UNAIR.

The visitation by the AUN-QA team was the first step of internationalization for the Midwifery Education program. Previously, the program that was established in 2008 has been accredited by National Accreditation Board of Higher Education (BAN-PT) on February 14, 2013.

Beside seeking international accreditation, the Midwifery Education Program FK UNAIR with the Indonesian Midwifery Education Association (AIPKIND) is also working to transform the curriculum of midwifery education in Indonesia. It was done by involving one of the best midwifery education institution in the UK and the world with vast experience in developing midwifery education, The University of Nottingham (UoN).

The number of midwives in Indonesia at the moment reaches 450 thousand, and they are spread throughout the country, from urban to peripheral areas. As an autonomous profession, the curriculum transformation of their education is important, so there will not be inequality of education and midwives and obstetricians support each other.

So far, Midwifery Education FK UNAIR as pioneer of bachelor degree and professional program in Indonesia initiated and improved the quality of midwifery education. Therefore, the internationalization effort through AUN-QA accreditation is very important to answer the global challenges. (*)
