UNAIR NEWS – As the smallest scope of society, family is a unit where health education initiated and implemented. The role of the family, in this case the parents, especially the mother, is very important in educating and monitoring the dental health of her child.

From that concern, a group of students of Faculty of Dental Medicine (FKG) Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) was deployed to carry out research-based community empowerment in Gayungan Community Health Center, Surabaya, December 2017 – January 2018.

“Every month, there are students sent as a form of PKL (Field Work Practice) from FKG UNAIR which aims to help society and Surabaya City Health Office in terms of promotion of dental and oral health,” said Gilang R. Sabdho Wening, drg. , M.Kes as the person in charge for PKL FKG UNAIR.

“In 2017, in general, the severity of children’s dental cases in some elementary schools in Surabaya have risk factors from the role of parents and teachers in school,” added Gilang who is also a lecturer in the Department of Public Dental Health Science (IKGM) FKG UNAIR.

This time, located at Gayungan Community Health Center of Surabaya, Co-ass student PKL team again found that the role of parent and teacher become one of the key success of dental health program of children.

“Based on research in this area, we conclude that parents still need to be guided and taught on how to assess the dental health of children. It shows the lack of knowledge of parents on dental health, “said Efata Dewi Nurmalitasari as head of PKL team.

As the output of each PKL activity, students are required to make executive summary as research report and recommendation to health stakeholders in Surabaya.

In their research report, the top five risk factors for dental disease support include poor parental dental knowledge, low visitation rates for dentists at puskesmas, high consumption of sweet and sticky foods, misplaced time to brush teeth in children, and the low response of parents to bring the child to the dentist after getting a referral. The report was made as a feedback to the Surabaya City Office.

Heart card

As a solution, to overcome these risk factors, the PKL team launched an innovation in the form of Kartu Hati or Healthy Teeth Card . This card is used as a parent’s guide to assess the dental hygiene of children independently, as well as liaison information between dentists, teachers, and parents in the district of Gayungan, Surabaya.

Inside this card there is information about how to keep the child’s teeth healthy, the columns of recording the habit of brushing teeth, to the dental severity table of the children.

“This card will not work if parental involvement to monitor and record is not well implemented. Therefore, at the launching of Kartu Hati, we also train parents and teachers how to use the card, “said Made Dwi Andri, coordinator of health promotional program and the alumnus of SMAN 5 Surabaya.

“We are happy with the support of FKG UNAIR in Gayungan Community Health Center. Because the innovation is needed to attract interest of primary school children and parents to care about their children’s teeth, “said drg. Putik Maya Sariri as dentist of Gayungan Community Health Center.

“In the future, we hope that this Karu Hati can be used as a control tool of puskesmas on dental health status of elementary school children, as well as able to make parents independent in assessing their dental care needs,” Made said in the end of the interview session. (*)
