UNAIR NEWS – Herdiantri Sufriyana, MD, M. Sc chose to focus on preeclampsia or pregnancy poisoning as his major thesis topic. The reason, preeclampsia is the second leading cause of death of pregnant women in Indonesia. In his research, the man graduated with 3.91 GPA focused on prevention efforts. For pregnant women living in the village, preeclampsia poses real problem.

Herdiantri’s research developed a form of prevention to certain pregnancy complications through exercise. According to him, prevention with certain exercise before pregnancy does not require lots of money and it can be done anywhere, including in the village. Meanwhile, if the development in the form of drugs or supplements, they may not purchase it let alone it is consumed every day as prevention.

“I am often asked whether the results of this study can be commercialized in the form of products? I said no. However, that’s the reason I developed it. However, this study will be very challenging in terms of funding, “he said.

Herdian has long been interested in this research. “I am interested and ‘dare’ to examine preeclampsia and pregnancy. Because this is the most effective thing to encourage me to learn, my passion, a strong desire to learn a thing, “said Herdian.

Limited facilities and funds had become an obstacle. After the proposal hearing, October 2016, there was a five-month break until finally managed to get funding to begin research, March 2017. Another challenge, he had to calm dozens of lab mice for 28 days. A day should at least be in the lab for 2-3 hours, including during the process of calculating cells. Total cells to be counted were around 144 thousand, and it took 6 hours / day for 24 days.

“Counting the cells is the most tiring process. Although the process was assisted by veterinary students, “he said. But he finally got through it well, and Herdian graduated as the best graduate as well. (*)
