UNAIR NEWS – Five students of Faculty of Veterinary (FKH) Universitas Airlangga have found out the efficacy of Apis Dorsata honey bee originally from Sumbawa which could enhance three times fertility of bird egg of Copshycus saularis (Kacerhitam ) in 15% dose of honey. Besides, it also can increase the mating behavior but could not gain the numbers of egg.
They are Abdullah Hasib (FKH 2013) as a leader of the researcher team, Risaldi Muhammad (FKH 2014), Talita YuandaReksa (FKH 2014), danAlvinaUlimaz A (FKH 2015).
Under the supervision by their advisor, Dr. Erma Safitri, drh., M.S., the research result been written on research proposal of Student Creativity Program of Exacta Research (PKM-PE). After successful passing the assessment and got research funding, now the research toward to final stage of National Student Scientific Week (PIMNAS) 30th 2017, which will be held by KEMENRISTEKDIKTI (Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education Republic of Indonesia). this event will take place at Universitas Muslim Indonesia (UMI) Makassar, South Sulawes, on 23rd– 28th August 2017.
“We conducted this research as an effort of alternative solution to increase Copshycus saularis population with Apis Dorsata Honey Bee,” Abdullah said
According to Abdullah the background of this research was because In Indonesia singing bird is the most popular pet. Moreover there were many bird-singing competitions that economically were able to encourage the birds demand in market.
During this time there has no rules to use birds from captive breeding in the competition, thus, it makes the bird population begin to decline. Even worst, there were some wild exploitation of wildlife habitat in the forest and the lack of awareness of conservation, which can lead to high risk of bird extinction in Indonesia.
“One of the efforts to increase the population is by optimizing the quality of reproduction,” Abdullah said
Bird sexual behavior could be influenced by the feed management. The feed management in captive breeding often did not meet the bird physiology needs. In other hand, the pollution in captive breeding area also lead to delayed reproduction.
Based on research, it can be anticipated by providing feed that contains antioxidant. the highest antioxidant is in honey because honey has 150 polyphenols which consist of samphenol, flavonoid, flavonol, cetachins and cinnamic acid.
The strongest antioxidant of is in flavon and cetachin. Meanwhile it has been confirmend that highest cetachin is in honey of Apis Dorsata honey bee. In Indonesia the production of Apis Dorsata Honey is up to 70%.
By the research concluded that Honey from tropical honey bee Sumbaya called Apis Dorsata could enhance three times fertility and mating behavior of Copshycus saularis bird. But it could not increase the number of bird eggs.
