UNAIR NEWS – Through another method in which by Scanning Electron Microscope Interpretation showed that honey from Apis Dorsata bee indicated could be as preventive medicine for osteoporosis.

The research was developed by a team from Faculty of Veterinary (FKH) Universitas Airlangga, the members are are Samsi Yordan  (2015) as the leader,Abdullah Hasib (2013), M. Huda Ramadhan (2015), Salsabilla Abani (2016), dan Siti Nur Rohmah (2015).

Their research been written on Student Creativity Program Exacta Research (PKM-PE) and succeeded get research funding by Kemenristekdikti (Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education of Republic of Indonesia 2016 -2017).

Samsi Yordan said that osteoporosis is increased bone weakness, and it cause risk of broken bone. Osteoporosis is caused by some factors, includes gender, Age, ethnic/RACE and genetic.

“The main factor of Osteoporosis is the lower estrogen hormone. A women or an animal that experienced hysterectomy will occur menopause symptoms due to unproductive estrogen so it lead to delayed osteoblast formation and increased osteoclast; and it causes bone loss faster than the bone formation,” Samsi said

Today, the main medical of osteoporosis is by hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and bisphosphonate. Unfortunately, HRT has dangerous risk caused breast cancer. Besides, the other medicines are by consuming calcium and Vitamin D and the routine medicine.

“But, those medicines also have side effect, for example stomach pain, particularly, when the medicine use inappropriately,” she said

Honey was believed rich of antioxidant, such as flavonoid and phenolate acid. They will directly interact with receptor through ER-β and ER-α and gluconate acid that can increase calcium absorption in intestines.

Samsi and the team observed by animal testing (with laboratory rat) that used Ovariohysterectomy or ovarium taking.  The rats were treated with different dose of honey from March to June 2017. After the 12th week, the rats were necropsied to take the Os femur then analyzed by using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM).

The research showed that the bone that were not treated with honey experiencing decreased microarchitecture, meanwhile, for the bone with high dose honey treatment showed the bone density was normal without decreased microarchitecture. It indicated that honey from Apis Dorsata could be used as prevention medicine of osteoporosis

“We hope through this research people can understand and choose natural medicine than chemicals medicine that has side effect,” Samsi Yordan
