UNAIR NEWS – The significant obstacles of shrimp farming are not only the food supply in a cycle but also high cost to run water wheel as aeration. Five students of Faculty of Fisheries and Marine (FPK) Universitas Airlangga attempt solving this problem by providing an innovation free-energy magnet water wheel; it can be more 40% efficient.
They are Hafit Ari Pratama (the leader of the team), Muhammad Zulfikar Alfian Bahtiar, Irfan Mahbuby, Anisa Redhita Sari, and Zakariya. They hoped that their innovation could be usefull thing in aquaculture industry.
This innovation has been written on research proposal of Student Creativity Program (PKM) entitled “Magnetic Water wheel” (Kincir Tenaga Magnet). Under supervision their advisor, Putri Desi Wulan Sari S.Pi, M.Si, and it succeeded get funding from Kemenristekdikti 2017.
“This water wheel can be used for aeration ponds in intensive cultivation, especially Vannamei shrimp (Whiteleg shrimp) farming,”Hafit Ari Pratama said
This idea made for intensive cultivation, especially Vannamei shrimp. During this time, the cost for a circle was up to millions rupiah/hectare as operating cost. The high cost of operating was not only for the fee but also to drive water wheel for aeration.
The problem is if there were not water wheel for aeration, the cultivated shrimp commodities could grow slowly or even worst lead to death caused by the low oxygen solubility in the pond and the high pH.
During this time, water wheel been driven using diesel fuel and it cost up to 50% of total operating costs. Then, electric water wheel also have a relatively high cost, electricity costs still reach up to 30% of operating costs. In addition, it should take high power, so the efficiency could be classified as low.
How magnetic water wheel work is for the first it is driven by electric dynamo from battery power.
“Then battery will drive dynamo with its power and dynamo drive the waterwheel, and it continues,” Hafit said
According to them, this innovation still needed to optimize. Free energy that they used considered was not optimal, because their magnetic water wheel could not keep spinning and would stop in time. So, the guessed it needed optimization to make water wheel spinning longer as they expected. The optimization is by adding magnet and coil. So, the saved energy in battery could be more.
Their innovation of magnetic water wheel (KTM) considered as more environmentally friendly and could be operated without large power. It also has a higher efficiency than the previously solution, which is estimated to save up to 40% when compared to using electricity. (*)
