UNAIR NEWS – A total of 3,477 participants of 56th Universitas Airlangga’s Thematic Community Service Program – Learning Together with the Community (KKN-BBM) program are ready to serve in the community. They were sent out by Vice Rector I and the invited guests at Universitas Airlangga on Monday, July 17.

The Head of Institute of Community Service, Education, Training and Development (LP4M) Prof. Dr. Jusuf Irianto, M.Comm said that there is a fundamental change in the current implementation of Thematic KKN-BBM.

Students are required to run programs based on four major themes, health, mental revolution, family empowerment (pos daya), and labor.

“There is a fundamental change. The themes of the KKN program are eferred to the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) program. There are four themes in this current Thematic KKN-BBM: health, mental revolution, pos daya, and TKI (Indonesian Workers), “said Prof. Jusuf.

Participants of the thematic KKN-BBM program will be sent to ten cities and regencies on Tuesday, July 18. They are Surabaya, Gresik, Lamongan, Nganjuk, Sampang, Kediri, Bojonegoro, Jember, Probolinggo, and Banyuwangi.

The areas were based on local government requests and work programs to be implemented by the thematic KKN-BBM participants.

Together with the Ministry of Health and UNICEF, health programs will be implemented in all areas. The target is to reduce maternal and infant mortality rate, as well as to improve the nutritional adequacy rate.

The program on mental revolution in cooperation with the Coordinating Ministry of Human Development and Culture will be implemented in Gresik and Lamongan.

The program on family empowerment with local governments was implemented in four areas in Lamongan, Jember, Nganjuk, and Sampang.

The programs on labor in cooperation with the National Agency for the Placement and Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (BNP2TKI) are conducted in Banyuwangi, Jember, Bojonegoro and Sampang.

Besides Thematic KKN-BBM, five UNAIR students were also sent to follow KKN Kebangsaan in Gorontalo. In this program, UNAIR students participating KKN-BBM together with hundreds of other participants to instill national values in Gorontalo.

Starting this period, UNAIR students who attend at international conferences are also counted as the implementation of Thematic KKN-BBM. For this semester, there are 29 UNAIR students participating in international conferences in Thailand, Malaysia, South Korea and the UK.

They are from the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Dental Medicine, Faculty of Economics and Business, Faculty of Pharmacy, and Faculty of Humanities.

“They do not have to join KKN-BBM. However, if they have returned from abroad and the period of KKN-BBM is not over, they are allowed to follow KKN-BBM in order to gain experience. This is a great breakthrough because all of our students’ work is appreciated, ” he added.

Intervention and education
One of the other fundamental changes in the implementation of Thematic KKN-BBM is the continuity of the work program in the areas. In order to maintain the sustainability of the programs, students are asked to conduct surveys, interventions and education on the needs of local communities.

Jusuf who is also a human resources management expert also reminded students to make documentation of KKN-BBM activities in audio visual format and published in social media.

One of the drafters of Thematic KKN-BBM, Prof. Haryono Suyono encouraged the students to conduct the programs of Thematic KKN-BBM well.

“All of you carry a mission from the United Nations to build humanity in the next 15 years,” added Haryono.
