English Literature Students Teach Elementary School Students About Tolerance

UNAIR NEWS – The academician of Universitas Airlangga has held various events for Ramadhan. One of them is Ramadhan in Charity with EDSA (RICE) held by English Department Student Association (EDSA) Faculty of Humanities.

The concept of religious tolerance was the main concern of RICE event which was held for two days, June 3-4. The event themed “Faith in Humanity” has three series of event, study tour, iftar and suhur on the road.

There were 21 students of Class 4 elementary students from SD Al-Ikhlas, SD Kristen Santo Mikael, and Pasraman Saraswati II Sunday School. They are brought to three religious worshipping places Masjid Al-Ikhlas, Santo Mikael Church, and Pura Agung Jagat Karana.

“This tour is to introduce three different religious place to elementary students so they understand the religious tolerance. The topic was on fasting in each religion in a different form and way,” said Azifatul Azifah in the committee.

Azifah said that the elementary schools students were enthusiastic with the study tour. Some of them were excited they could get into other religion’s worshipping place. “I’ve never been to a church so I’m glad I could participate in this event,” said   Azifah quoted Keysya Febrina Putri, a student from SD Al-Ikhlas.

After their visit to the three places, they had a discussion in a religious tolerance forum. The discussion was attended by representative of religions in Surabaya. Then, it was followed with an iftar session.

RICE activity was appreciated by the Head of Parisada Hindu Dharma Indonesia I Wayan Suraka. According to Suraka, inter-religion tolerance is important to be instilled early on. For him, the early they know tolerance, children will respect the difference.

“The event held by these students is excellent especially when the issue of religious tolerance issue happening in Indonesia. I hope with this event, students understand the difference early on as the motto Bhinneka Tunggal Ika inscribed in Kakawin Sutasoma ,” said Suraka.

The event was ended with a distribution of 140 portions of meals for suhur with the locals.
