UNAIR NEWS –Faculty of Public Health Universitas Airlangga held free blood pressure check-ups on Wednesday, May 17. It was held to celebrate World Hypertension Day, May 17.
The free check-up event was conducted by a team of Puskesmas Kalijudan and Puskesmas Kenjeran, Surabaya. There were about 120 lecturers, staffs and students which have the check-up held in Sabdoadi Hall, FKM UNAIR.
Vice Dean III FKM UNAIR Ira Nurmala, Ph.D., said that this event was a follow up activity from a letter of Indonesian Ministry of Health and Surabaya Health Agency.
“This check-up includes weight, height, waist circumference, blood tension, blood sugar and cholesterol. It was held in Lactation corner, at the same time to introduce the lactation corner,” said Ira.
Atoillah Isfandiari, dr., M.Kes lecturer of Department of Epidemiology FKM said that the check-up was in line with Indonesia which is in the phase of epidemiological transition era.
Great prevalence of infectious disease was replaced with non-infectious diseases such as hypertension.
Through this event, Atoillah hoped that the public follow the health paradigm, not the illness paradigm by doing routine health check-ups so the potential illness can be identified.
Furthermore, the check-up is also to minimize the old paradigm in the public.
“By promoting health prevention effort in Campus, it will change the old paradigm which shows reluctance to have health check-ups as they will know they have illness. It causes one of the problems as they identify the illness but too late,” said Atoillah. (*)
