UNAIR NEWS – Department of Physics, Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), Universitas Airlangga excels on Medical Physics and Bio-optics as students and lecturers conduct researches on those two fields. It was stated by Physics bachelor program coordinator Prof. Dr. M. Yasin, Drs., M.Si, while showing researches being conducted by his students.

“Because UNAIR’s orientation in in medical field, most of the researches are medical such as optic fibers. Optic fibers research can be developed to detect heart beats. The paper is accepted, but  it is still a model,” said Yasin.

There are students who conduct research on Material Physics. The topic of the study was addition of metal to hard bone candidate. There was also medical instrumentation design.

Dyah Hikmawati, M.Si, one of the Material Physics said that students are often involved in lecturers researches. “Lecturers have researches and they involve the students when working on them,” said Dyah.

Service

As an effort to introduce Physics to the public, lecturers of Department of Physics has agenda to hold community service to senior high schools in East Java. It is an annual event held by the lecturers.

In the community service, the teachers and students of SMA were introduced to general knowledge, methods and application of Physics in daily life. “It is managed by the department to improve quality of Physics learning so students and teachers can be even more interested in Physics. We also introduce robots to students, and how to build a simple robot,” said Yasin.

To improve their motivation to learn in Physics bachelor program, the teacher introduces a Physics lecturer coming from the area of community service.  In Pacitan for example, students were introduced to Prof. Dr. Retna Apsari, M.Si., Professor of Physics in Bio-optics. So does for program promotion in Sumenep.

“Beside promoting the program, we showed them that we have a professor from Pacitan. It motivated more students from Pacitan and also Sumenep. There is a doctor like bu Aminatun (Dr. Ir. Aminatun, M.Si). She was requested to speak in front of her school. We invited the neighboring schools. We decide a popular theme like robotics, so they want to learn Physics,” said Dyah.

As of now, there are at least eight areas which have been visited by the lecturers of Physics department for publicization of the programs, such as Madiun, Trenggalek, Mojokerto, Jombang, Tuban, Gresik, Pamekasan, and Sumenep.

“We change places. We want to motivate them to like Physics. Every year we have self-evaluation, where the students of UNAIR Physics are coming from. The regions with no students can be the next target. We serve there as well as promoting the department of Physics,” said Dyah.
