UNAIR NEWS – The number of periodontitis cases such as inflammatory gum is still high in Surabaya. It was stated by Professor of Periodontics, Faculty of Dentistry (FKG) Universitas Airlangga Prof. Dr. Muhammad Rubianto, drg., M.S., Sp.Perio (K), on Wednesday January 1. Prof. Rubi made the statement when he was interviewed on the dental and gum condition.

“The two biggest diseases with highest prevalence are dental caries and inflammatory gum. If there were 10 Indonesians, 11 of them would have inflammatory gum,” said Prof. Rubi while giggling.

“Let’s say there are 100 people admitted into hospital, 90 people suffered from the diseases. Sometimes even 95 people or all of them suffered from it,” said Prof. Rubi.

Accroding to Prof. Rubi, the people are not aware of the disease. Most Indonesian gum is red so if they brush it, they must bleed. It is called inflammatory gum. Beside inflammatory gum, some conditions show recessed gum which means that the person suffered from a degenerative disease. Some also have swollen gum, so it could indicate a tumor.

“I have just sent some students to measure the prevalence of gum disease in all community health centers (Puskesmas) in Surabaya. First, the result showed that there is a high prevalence. Second, unfortunately in the health center, the dentist does not have a device to measure the gum’s health,” he added.

So, what makes that high prevalence number in Indonesia? He said that there are two factors. First, the low gross national product and second, there is no organizational structure in the Ministry of Health which specially handles the dental and oral problems.

Regarding the prevention, the professor who is also a musician suggested that everyone maintain their health holistically and comprehensively as gum is the health display of organs in the body.

“So if there is gingival recession, there is a degenerative disease, disrupted protein and fat metabolism, or there’s metabolic syndrome. Currently, there are many people have metabolic syndrome and suffer from many diseases, high blood pressure, sugar and fat. They must be handled, periodontitis appeared because of the low system state,” he said. (*)
