UNAIR NEWS – One of the reasons why livestock breeding in Indonesia does not develop well is traditional management. It was stated by Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FKH)Universitas Airlangga lecturer Dr. Trilas Sardjito, drh., M.Si, during interview with UNAIR NEWS. The traditional management meant is the approach taken to develop the livestock breeding, such as livestock rearing, nutrional feeding and the knowledge of the breeder.
The traditional management is caused by the paradigm of the breeders which still view that livestock breeding is only a side business or even only a short term investment. So the breeding is likely to run without some planning.
“Beside the management which is still traditional, it has not been a full time business, only as an investment. It won’t work, so if the child is getting married, the cows are sold. It will never develop well,” said Trilas.
Beside the existing paradigm, the development is affected by feed availability, especially grass and concentrates. Grass availability still depends on the season while the concentrate price is still at six thousand rupiah. Compared to China, the price there is only Rp 2,500 with the same quality and the government does not give subsidy for it. Therefore, the breeders only feed the livestock with grass.
The third factor is the breeders’ knowledge. According to Trilas, the knowledge they have is just from their parents and surrounding environments. The rarely get the latest knowledge.
“At the mean time, the current condition is different from their ancestors’ condition. So creativity is needed and it is not presented to the breeders. That matter is known well by the universities but they are difficult to go to the community as it is always costly. When we go there, we need to leave our academic work and need facilities. We are, actually, ready for it and it is impossible to do it in a day because there should be continuity,” said the expert on artificial insemination FKH UNAIR.
If the government expects food security before 2045, then those three factors should be addressed together by the government, breeders and academicians.
So, according to Trilas, the breeders do not understand their livestock rearing period. “If they only breed only as side business, they did not expect them to multiply as long as they are fed, it’s over. That’s how our breeders are,” said Trilas. (*)
