FK UNAIR Breaks Record for Giving Basic Life Support Training

UNAIR NEWS – Universitas Airlangga academicians made a new achievement on community service. This time, the doctors in Anesthesiology and Reanimation Department, Faculty of Medicine (FK) Universitas Airlangga broke a record of Indonesian and World Achievement Institution (Lepri) on Sunday, December 25.

Held in a the Islamic boarding school Gontor 3 and Putri 5 Kediri, there was a training on Basic Life Support (BHD) participated by about 1,656 students, boys and girls. The activity involved 400 instructors consisted of 21 anesthetic specialists, 69 general doctors, 175 FK UNAIR students, 135 other medical staffs.

BHD training involving instructors and students broke two records. First, it broke the record for most participants in BHD training and second was for BHD training with most instructors and female participants about 600 people. Third, in both venues heart resuscitation was done for 15 minutes with total 198,000 chest compressions while in training they used mannequins for the practice.

The award from Lepri was given to FK UNAIR as the initiator, RSUD Dr. Soetomo, RS UNAIR, RS dr. Saiful Anwar, RS dr. Soedono, and representatives of Perdati as supporting parties and Ponpes Gontor 3 and 5 as the venues.

“Today, we are not only breaking the records in Indonesia but also in the world,” said Paulus Pangka, President Director of Lepri, when presenting the award to Dean of FK UNAIR Prof. Dr. Soetojo, dr., Sp.U.

The objective of the event was to educate the public especially Gontor students on the importance of BHD. The initiator of BHD who was also the head of the committee Prananda Surya Airlangga, M.Kes., dr., Sp.An (K), said that the training was a form of service to the community, as well as research and achievement.

“Hopefully, with the knowledge, the students can implement it in their community. They will be able to help during emergency which can happen anywhere, anytime and to anyone,” said Doctor Airlangga.

For the event, UNAIR collaborated with institutions such as General Hospital (RSUD) Dr. Soetomo, Indonesian Anesthetic and Intensive Doctor Association of East Java, RSUD dr. Saiful Anwar Malang, RSUD dr. Soedono Madiun, RS UNAIR, RS Paru Jember, and various community independent institutions.

Prior to this event, the academician of Anesthesiology and Reanimation Department, Faculty of Medicine (FK) Universitas Airlangga also has held similar activities in malls and hospitals. (*)
