UNAIR NEWS – Indonesia needs to protect itself from Zika virus as the virus has reached some neighboring countries such as Singapore and Malaysia. The increasing prevalence of this disease every year, has made Indonesia declare a state of emergency, even though only Jambi indicated positive of this virus.
In response to this case, some academicians and researchers of Faculty of Public Health (FKM) with Airlangga Health Science Institute (AHSI) held 1st International Symposium of Public Health themed“Emerging and Re-emerging Disease” in Mercure Hotel Surabaya, on Wednesday, November 30.
The symposium involved 164 participants from students of FKM UNAIR, FKM Universitas Diponegoro, Universitas Brawijaya, Universitas Soedirman, UMI Makassar, Muji Rahayu Hospital and UNAIR foreign students from Nigeria, Namibia, Yemen, and Thailand. There were three speakers Prof. Dr. Nasronudin, dr., Sp.PD., K-PTI, FINASIM., who talked about The Role of Universitas Airlangga, Prof. Cordia Chu on Managing and Handling Zika in Community Setting and Dr. Pang Junxiong Vincent from University of Singapore on epidemiology of Zika.
“We invited a practitioner from Singapore as well as there are cases of Zika virus. It is an effort to promote awareness and Indonesian researchers can conduct researches on it,” said Sri Sumarni as the head of the committee.
Sri Sumarni explained that 164 participants were students or practitioners contributing in the researches and 89 abstracts were submitted, 52 of them were presented to get Best Oral and Best Poster.
Various means have been done by the government in preventing the virus carried by Aedes mosquitoes like Aedes Aegypti and Aedes Albopictus in the airport to minimize the spreading as elaborated by the Head of AHSI in the symposium.
“People coming from the endemic area and showed symptoms of virus infection should be quarantined, then they should be checked for Dengue Virus. During pregnancy, it’s better to stay in the country and avoid being bitten by mosquitoes. So far, only one area, Jambi, indicated Zika virus positive, in East Java or Kalimantan is zero,” she explained. (*)
