UNAIR NEWS – Information and Public Relations Center (PIH) Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) held a public communication dialogue titled “Public Relations Partnership Initiative of Universities in East Java,” on Thursday, November 30, in Management Office Building UNAIR.
All Indonesian Communication Bachelor Associations (ISKI), Public Relations practitioners from universities in East Java, media workers also some NGOs and institutions in East Java were invited. The head of ISKI of East Java and a lecturer of Communications UNAIR Prof. Rachma Ida, Ph.D, and the founder of Good News From Indonesia, Akhyari Hananto were also invited.
Suko Widodo as the Head of PIH UNAIR in his address said that the event was held for sharing and finding solutions to the problems faced by Public Relations staff in universities.
“For this discussion, I was inspired by a conversation with other public relations colleagues while we were hanging out, talking about some problems and the communication technology which is getting higher,” he said.
In the beginning of the discussion, the universities’ public relations practitioners expressed their opinions on some complaints over publicities of the university in the media. “For me, public relations job is really hard, such as to publish interesting events so the media come and see them,” said Irma, public relations staff of Universitas 17 Agustus Surabaya.
After listening to some opinions and problems of public relations, there were presentations from the two speakers and discussion session. In her presentation, Prof. Rachma Ida talked about a public relations staff as the information provider to the public. Furthermore, she also explained the importance of maintaining relations with the media, so an institution can be well known by the society and the information can get to public.
“You know well the concept of communication. The core of relations is communication. Communication expertise is with us. Building relations with media is not only for big events, more than that, it can be done through daily routines, such as by having conversations and hanging out and discussing the current news,” said Prof. Rachma Ida.
Second presentation was from Akhyari Hananto, which discussed about how a staff of public relations can show interesting things to public, following the current need and interest of the society.
“We must know what the public like, we need something new to attract their attention,” he explained.
He also explained the importance of social media for branding in the society. Public relations of universities or agencies should be able to make audio and visual innovations which can be publish through social media as a form of message to the public.
