UNAIR NEWS – Universitas Airlangga is mourning. A professor of Histological Anatomy Faculty of Medicine (FK) UNAIR Prof. H. Ari Gunawan, dr., MS., PA(K)., Ph.D, passed away in Graha Amerta RSUD Dr. Soetomo, on Sunday, November 20 at 1130 local time. He died at 68 years of age.
From the residence, there will be a memorial service in FK UNAIR hall so the academicians could pay their last respect. Then, it was laid to rest in the Keputih public cemetery, Surabaya.
His passing has made some colleagues feel sorrow. The Head of Histological Anatomy Department FK UNAIR Dr. H. Abdurrachman, dr., M.Kes, PA(K), was one of them. Abdurrachman said that in his life, Prof. Ari is known for his politeness and modesty. As a lecturer, he was known to be attentive, and low profile individual either to his peers or his juniors.
During life, he often conducted researches and supervised students in their final assignment either in bachelor, master or doctoral. “He was my promoter when I took my doctoral program. He always cared about his students and never gave them difficulties. It left an impression to us, his students,” he said.
Vice Rector I UNAIR Prof. Djoko Santoso, dr., Ph.D., Sp.PD, KGH,FINASIM also said that he was a role model lecturer. Not only for his politeness, but also his professional academic conduct and his great vision. For Prof. Djoko, Prof. Ari competence always prioritizes ethics and logics. Both were his strengths in transferring his knowledge on histological anatomy.
Prof. Chairul Anwar, dr., drh., MS., a lecturer in Histological Anatomy FK UNAIR was also in sorrow. He said that he felt a great loss as he knew him his whole life as kind and simple individual.
“Three years ago I always invited him to check his health condition, but he always refused and said ‘I’ll treat it myself’ and never wanted to have it checked. But he never complained about his health as well,” he said.
Lately, his health condition deteriorated but he still went through his routines. “He never took a leave, even when he felt unwell. Before his death, the professor said ‘why is it difficult to reach 70 years old’ His condition was unwell at that time. I know what he meant,” said Prof. Chairul.
