UNAIR NEWS – Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) Universitas Airlangga celebrated its 39th Anniversary with “Critical, Creative and Competitive” as a theme. Various events are held in celebrating the anniversary of the faculty established in 1977. One of the events is International Conference on Contemporary Social and Political Affair held in Garuda Mukti Hall, Management Office Building, Campus C UNAIR on Tuesday, November 15.
This time, it was titled Reexamining Governance: Strengthening Citizenship in a Changing World. Hundreds of participants from many countries took parts and it invited six speakers who will present their studies in turns for two days.
For the first day, Tuesday, November 15, the speakers were Prof. Vedi R. Hadiz (University of Melbourne), Prof. Maciej Henneberg (University of Adelaide), and Prof. Ramlan Surbakti (Professor of FISIP UNAIR). While for the second day, Wednesday, November 16, there will be presentations of Prof. Gerry Van Klinken (University of Amsterdam), Prof. Seiichiro Shimamoto (Kyoto Bunkyo University), and Former Chairman of Human Rights Commission of United Nations (PBB) Prof. Makarim Wibisono.
The international conference was focused on the performance of government in strengthening citizenship in this dynamic ear in the context of politics, economy, social and culture. There are open discussions for academicians and researchers to contribute some ideas through social and political paper presentation.
“Through this international conference, we can get explanation on the happening contemporary phenomena in the society through social and politic perspectives,” said Vice Rector III Prof. M. Amin Alamsjah, Ir., M.Si., Ph.D in his speech.
“The explanation is also expected to provide new insights so we can improve our quality of life,” he added.
Dean of FISIP UNAIR Dr. Falih Suaedi, Drs., M.Si in his speech added that the conference also maintain one value, addressing each other. “Through this conference we maintain one value, addressing each other. As we discuss social and political issues with various and different perspective,” he explained.
Falih said that the problems in the world will not be able to solve from one perspective only. Therefore, FISIP invited speakers from many countries, Japan, Holland, Australia and also experts of UNAIR.
Head of ICoCSPA Sulikah Asmorowati said that the conference was held to facilitate the scientists to present their ideas related to social and political issues developing nowadays. “For that reasons, there are foreign scientists invited in this conference such as from Australia, Lesotho and Palestina,” she said.
There was also Stand Up Comedy, Parikan, Bazaar, Fun Walk, Blood Donation, Alumni Congress, International Conference and the main event is Soetandyo Scholarship & Award Night. There was also competitions such as English Debate, Esssay Competition, Band Contest, Volleyball and also Table Tennis.
ICoCSPA has been held twice by FISIP. In 2015 it was called International Conference on Democracy and Accountability (ICODA 2015). (*)
