UNAIR NEWS – Achievements in literature made by Universitas Airlangga have never ceased from happening. Recently, an alumnus of UNAIR Historical Studies has won Kusala Sastra Khatulistiwa 2016. The poet, F. Aziz Manna was qualifying for the prestigious award for its collection of poems titled Playon.

Previously, the work has also won Poetry Competition of East Java Arts Council. It was then the work was published by Pagan Press through indie means. Because of the achievement Aziz won Rp 50 million prize money.

Kusala Sastra Khatulistiwa is an Indonesian award event initiated by Richard Oh and Takeshi Ichiki since 2001. It used to be called Khatulistiwa Literary Award before until in 2014 became Kusala Sastra Khatulistiwa. The nominees are literary works, either prose or poetry, published in a year period. This year, the judges chose literary works published from July 2015 to August 2016.

To UNAIR NEWS explained that his work was through in the last moment as there were many contestants resigning. The books resigning did not offer something new to the literature. Playon tried to offer freshness and character.

Different from other nominees, Playon was judged in a PDF format. It was because its physical format has not been widely distributed. Interestingly, Playon made it for ten finalists until it was chosen as the best poetry collection book.

After his winning in KSA, Aziz hoped that he can always create more works. His success has motivated him even more to bring his character and freshness into the Indonesian literary scene.

“I hope I can still create more works. As a poet, it is my job, to write poems,” said Aziz.

The man born on December 8, 1978, admitted that he wouldn’t have won without support of one of the judges. Yogi Ishabib, supported Playon in the discussion session as he thought it deserved to win.

“I insist that Playon has offered freshness in Indonesian literature. Its internal aspects were different from any poem collection books. Furthermore, the other nominees have overflown the market in Jakarta. So when Playon was in, there was freshness through its new space utilization. The five judges gave three to two points for the poems,” said Yogi to UNAIR NEWS reporter.
