UNAIR NEWS – Our Days Breast Cancer Awareness Day is an event of Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2016 held by students and lecturers of Public Health program of Faculty of Public Health (FKM)  PDD Universitas Airlangga Banyuwangi. The event held in the Village Chief office of Kampung Mandar, Banyuwangi, ended on Saturday, October 15.

According to Rizka khawari (20), the head of the committee, ODBCAD themed “Awareness Improvement and Early Detection of Breast Cancer through SADARI among PKK members of Kampung Mandar.” The objectives were to encourage Banyuwangi people to actively contribute and concern with their breast health in order to minimize breast cancer prevalence in Banyuwangi. Suciati, aged 40, the Head of PKK of Banyuwangi sub-district, was present and supported the local PKK members.

“The event was held in a talk show with speakers, dr. Abdul Hanan Sp.B-Onk, UNAIR 2002 alumnus and Siti Romlah, a survivor of breast cancer with her husband Adi Suraya, “ she said.

Faris Mohammad HM (20), deputy of the organizer, explained that the event was a health promotion to society especially for middle-aged women. There were 50 women from PKK Kampung Mandar aged 35 and above. They were expected to know the danger, symptoms, epidemiology, treatment and early detection through SADARI method.

Adi Suraya, husband of Siti Romlah (the survivor) hoped that the event would not only for the women but also for their husbands. Why? While he was taking his wife, there were a lot of women felt  jealous as their husbands did not accompany them, so they did not feel supported by their husbands.

”As breast cancer is dangerous, and the decision maker is the husband, I felt bad listening to my wife’s friends’ stories,” said Adi Suraya.

dr.Abdul Hanan explained that breast cancer is dangerous, its early symptoms often undetected. For 1 cm growth, it takes eight years, but it grows faster to 10 cm in three years after that. It grows rapidly in stadium IV, when there is small possibility for the patient to stay alive.

According to Mujiati (40), it was a useful event. She knows now how to check by herself. She is also aware of the danger of breast cancer and the importance of early detection. She hoped that there will be following events for other communities. (*)
