UNAIR NEWS – Indonesia is a country located between two continents and two oceans, and also has at least 17,504 islands. Therefore, it has a strategic position for international traffic and trade.

The increasing mobility of the population as an impact of development and transportation technological advancement has made travelling time between countries exceed the disease incubation period.

As its logical consequences, the risk on contagious disease and health problems is higher as there are more entry points to Indonesian territories. So, health quarantine management should be performed comprehensively and conduct the reintegration in order to perform containment.

It was the reason for the visit made by legislation board of Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), to discuss the draft bill on health quarantine. “The visit was held to discuss the draft bill on health quarantine which was still on level 1,” said H. Totok Daryanto, Se., the Head of Legislation Board of DPR RI.

“Through this visit, we hoped that we get inputs and information which we may miss,” he added.

The work visit held in Kahuripan 301, Management Office Building on Tuesday October 18 was attended by representative of Universitas Surabaya (UBAYA), Universitas Wijaya Kusuma (UWK). UNAIR was represented by Vice Rector II Dr. Muhammad Madyan, S.E., M.Si., M.Fin.

“UNAIR has been a driving force of health science and technology in Indonesia. In the future we aim for 500 Top World University,” said Madyan. “UNAIR has been referred for national health development,” he added.

The organization of health quarantine is to manage the vehicles, personnel and equipments in the entry points, harbors or airports. Nevertheless, the bill on Sea and Airspace Quarantine is deemed to be outdated with the legal expectation and needs of people, including international management development.

Beside, international health quarantine organization has not been managed at all. Therefore, new management with new laws to manage health quarantine in entry points, either in harbors, airports and land borders.

Beside East Java, the visit of Legislation Board DPR RI is held from October 18 to 20 and in North Sumatera and Bali.

“Hopefully this collaboration can head to a better direction,” said Madyan. (*)
