UNAIR NEWS – For the last two years, academicians of Faculty of Pharmacy (FF) Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) have done their community service program in Bangkalan, Pamekasan and Sidoarjo. From 2014 until now, the event is held as one of the activities celebrating 53rd FF Anniversary.

According to Dean of FF UNAIR Dr. Dra. Hj. Umi Athijah, M.S., Apt, the program involved all students and lecturers of all departments. They are Pharmacognosy  and Phytochemistry, Pharmaceutics, Clinical Pharmacy, Community Pharmacy and Chemistry Pharmacy.

“With the program, we hope that the community can deal with their problems regarding pharmaceutical goods and products,” explained Umi.

The program of “Developing Healthy Community with Pharmacist” consisted of some varied activities. There was counseling on safe additives for food like the coloring and artificial sweetener. There was also medicinal plants planting to provide community’s need like herbal drug making and masker making.

“We also taught them on how to keep drugs correctly. For them with chronic diseases, they have to stock drugs at home. And they have to do it properly. So after they keep them they have to preserve the stability,” added Umi.

Every location held different activities. In PAmekasan and Bangkalan, they academicians specifically focused on drugs management. “Madurese community is unique. They can keep the drugs anywhere as they have issue on language. So we thought their health literacy poses a problem there,” said Umi. The visit to Pamekasan was made on Sunday, September 4.

From the counseling, the community responded well. “So far, the response was positive. They know how to concoct their own herbal medicine, from boiling, fire management and also the pan. At least they know it. The objective is to meet their need on drugs. They also know how to keep drugs now,”

For the program implementation, FF UNAIR collaborated with RSUD Bangkalan, Pamekasan Health Agency, Indonesian Pharmacist Association region Pamekasan. (*)
