UNAIR NEWS – The implementation of ASEAN Economic Community (MEA) in 2015 has demanded nurses to have knowledge and skill on Basic Trauma Cardiac Life Support (BTCLS). It made Faculty of Nursing (FKp) UNAIR collaborate with PPNI Education and Training Agency East Java to hold BTCLS training in FKp UNAIR. The event was held from August 19 to August 21, 2016, it was prioritized for students in the end of their studies as a training before they work as professionals.
Basic Trauma Cardiac Life Support (BTCLS) itself is an effort to provide emergency aid to prevent mortality and organ damage. In BTCLS there are six phases, detection, suppression, pre-hospital, hospital and rehabilitation phase.
BTCLS is needed not only as requirement of a profession, but it is also important to see the case in the field. Such as in traffic accidents and natural disaster which happen more recently. From those emergency incidents, not all casualties die on site but they often die during the journey to hospital or puskesmas. It happens because the skill on BTCLS has not been prepared well.
The training was enthusiastically followed by the participants, started with pre test BTCLS which was aimed to measure the participants knowledge related to trauma and cardiovascular emergency. It is to provide clear picture of the content of BTCLS training. Then there were evaluation test either in theory and practice on the last day.
“We wanted to prepare the students on how to handle patients with trauma and cardiovascular cases, so we can suppress disability and death casualties because of trauma and heart cases,” said Dr. Hanik.Endang Nihayati, S.Kep. Ns., M.Kep as a lecturer of Mental Gerontic and Community FKp UNAIR, as well as the supervisor of the training. (*)
