UNAIR NEWS – Delvac Oceandy, , a senior lecturer and researcher of University of Manchester (UoM), England gave a lecture on “Key to Successful Career on Research”. He was an alumnus of Faculty of Medicine (FK) Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) bachelor program, graduated in 1996. After graduation, Delvac chose to continue his study abroad to fulfill his dream.

“Graduated from FK, I had dreams and aspirations. At that time, they are maybe irrational. They’re dreams so I try to achieve them. I wanted to have a career on research and ‘go international’,” he said.

Prof. Delvac said that he used to be active conducting researches during college, but it was limited at national level only. After graduation, he got a scholarship to have his master and doctoral program in Australia. “Then I got an opportunity to have postdoctoral program in England. So, I moved to Universitas Manchester and work there until now,” he said.

From the discussion and sharing session with the participants, the problems on research experienced by lecturers are many, from the funding to an unfavorable climate of research. But, Prof. Delvac said that a researcher must be smart to deal with them. In the last ten years, he has conducted no less than 30 researches.

“There is a saying which says ‘There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing’. If you want success, in any conditions, you have to be smart. We must succeed. Don’t say ‘because’ but ‘even though’. Always say ‘even though’ at first. If you have commitment, resolve and will, you will reach your dream,” he said.

Prof. Delvac said that Indonesian people are quite smart. It means that Indonesia has excellent human resources to compete with other countries. But according to Delvac, Indonesian people have a lack of confidence.

“What’s missing from our human resources are conviction and self-confidence. The weakness is feeling inferior. It’s like losing before the fight. It must be abandoned. We must believe that if we have the conviction, we can,” he said confidently.

In the occasion, Prof. Delvac also shared some tips so UNAIR can reach Top 500 World Class University.

“There is always a sky above the sky. It means that we can’t feel arrogant or superior. We must know our own level. Out there, there are still things explore, learn and challenges to face. Don’t stay confined in the shell. If you feel comfortable here, it doesn’t mean that there’s nothing more to explore out there. Stay open to see the world,” he said.

“In the end I am here because I have seen what’s out there. The keys are dare to get out, hardwork and belief to achieve success,” he said. (*)
