Diseases Keep Spreading, University Expected to Produce Epidemiologists

UNAIR NEWS – An epidemiologist is expected to conduct surveillance (observation in the society) to illustrate and assess health of the public. It was stated by Dr. dr. Alden Henderson, as the visiting lecturer in a lecturer titled “Public Health Practice For Tropical Health”, in Soemarto Hall Faculty of Public Health (FKM)  UNAIR on Thursday, August 11.

In the event attended by students of Epidemiology master program and also lecturers of FKM UNAIR, Alden encouraged that an epidemiologist must be able to make a program and policy in improving the public’s health.

“Epidemiologists must also evaluate every action, program and healthcare services,”  said the expert of Communicable Diseases Center (CDC) the USA.

An epidemiologist, according to Alden, must have great curiosity, is a good thinker and good action on health problems and give solutions to the problems. Therefore it is important to produce epidemiologists for the future generation as health issues and threats happen around the world.

“An epidemiologist is to be a problem solver, identify, describe and solve the problem,” he said during his lecture.

Regarding the importance of epidemiologists’ roles in the society, Alden considered FKM UNAIR through its Epidemiology master program is also expected to provide education on epidemiology, so it can produce scientists and practitioners on public health especially epidemiologists. (*)
