There are some tips to get a successful English test such as TOEFL, English Language Proficiency Test (ELPT) and so on. Last week, UNAIR NEWS had an opportunity to interview the Dean of Faculty of Humanities Diah Ariani Arimbi SS., MA., PhD. FISIP UNAIR Bachelor program graduate who continued her master program to University of Northern Iowa, the United States of America and doctoral program to University of New South Wales, Australia, shared some tips and tricks to get successful English test, the International language.

Study Routinely

Studying is the main key to success including for English tests, whatever the tests, TOEFL, ELPT and other tests. All this time, there are many books which discuss on how to get the expected results.

Nothing is instant. Therefore, read the books. Don’t forget to adjust them with the kind of test you take. Beside books, there are many internet links provide test prepaparation materials.

“Understand the patterns of the questions. Generally, they are always similar. The difference was only the content. If someone already master the patterns, whatever the questions they can be done easily,” said Diah.

Familiarize self with English

Familiarizing yourselves with English will make you unite with the language. If it happens, your understanding will improve. How can we do it? It can be done by listening to songs, watching English language films (with no Indonesian subtitles) and by reading English references.

Constant interaction with English either through audio and visual makes learning English fun. If you enjoy learning the language, the lesson will be easily absorbed and understood.

Consider as Challenges

Many students consider English tests as burdens, either for graduation or scholarship. If it happens, test will always be difficult psychologically.

Therefore, as of now, consider them as challenges. Be sure that the process will be over as long as you never stop learning and be serious in it. It is a cliché but at least we change the paradigm so it will be easier to get through. (*)
