UNAIR NEWS – The problem of beef scarcity always haunts the state. The scarcity is even followed with predictable soaring price. As an example, in Ramadan, lebaran  and after the holiday like nowadays. As it happens routinely, the state administration must have preventive measures.

A professor of Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FKH)  Prof Dr Anwar Ma’ruf M.Kes., drh.,said that there are many aspects which cause the scarcity and soaring beef price such as the unstable farming sector condition.

At the moment, the farming center meant is in Bima, Nusa Tenggara. It is a great demand that the government must reinforce the facility to produce beef with great quality and quantity. Beside in Bima, new development and reinforcement of farming centers must be performed in other regions, like in Sumatera, Kalimantan, Java, Sulawesi and other areas. So the beef demand can be met in quality and quantity.

How can we get good beef products? The young cows must be excellent. Here is where the experts come in. They must participate in producing and formulating special breed ready for big-scale production.

If the farming centers are ready, the seedlings are existing, we should never forget the feeding aspects as based on the observation, in producing beef, feeding spends most of the cost, about 60-70 percent. The government must be able to formulate a way to get effective and efficient feed. Again, the experts’ roles are expected.

Interestingly, beside the supporting system aspects, the low level marketing process should also receives attention. The marketing of big scale farming center must be controlled well as they have strong network of marketing.

What is meant by low level marketing here is the price and market control of local farmers. They are farmers in villages with limited quantity of livestock around dozens and even less from that.

“Those people must be supported by the government. If not, they will find other professions and it will decrease national beef supply. Indonesia still needs those farmers in order to reach beef self-sufficient,” said Anwar.

At the moment, the price in the low level always dropped. It was believed to be caused by the work of livestock broker. If the price always drops for the small farmers, they will lose interest to work in the field. Central and domestic aythorities must protect them with regulations. (*)
