UNAIR NEWS – Two German students who are having their internship program in UNAIR were amazed by festivities of Lebaran in Indonesia especially in UNAIR, Surabaya. Both Turkish descendents, Yusra Todil is from International School of Management, Frankfurt, and Sagal Elmi is from Fernuni Hagen, Cologne.
They arrived in Surabaya few days before Lebaran, July 3 and they said that this year’s Eid-ul-Fitr experience was different from what they have experience in Germany. “Amazing, Ramadan and Lebaran here was so lively and full of life,” Yusra said in the interview during halal-bihalal in Management Office Building UNAIR, Tuesday, July 12.
In fasting month, there are many mosques holding evening prayers. Speakers of those praying places did not stop reciting holy verses. Before Lebaran, the convoy for takbiran was also held merrily.
In German, said Yusra, she only celebrates Eid-ul-Fitr with her family. There are no activities like halal-bihalal or silaturrahim. “It will be an unforgettable memory. Everyone is celebrating the day by forgiving each others,” she said.
Similar to Yusra, Sagal was also amazed with the tradition. She believed that the activity can bring everyone closer. Yusra and her who were just arrived in Surabaya had many acquaintances during the proceeding in Management Office Building UNAIR. “Togetherness is clearly showed,” she said.
Yusra and Sagal are in UNAIR with internship program to learn in International Program Development of International Office and Partnership. Yusra will go through internship in IOP until October while Sahal will learn more on it until August.” (*)
