Ulul ‘Azmi Mosque from UNAIR Alumni Officially Opened

UNAIR NEWS – “Ulul ‘Azmi” Mosque dedicated by the alumni to UNAIR on Friday, May 27 was officially opened by the Head of Alumni Association  (IKA) UNAIR Prof. Dr. Muhammad Hatta Ali, SH., MH. Accompanied by East Java Governor Dr. Soekarwo, SH., M.Hum., UNAIR Rector Prof. Dr. Moh Nasih, SE., MT., Ak., MCA., the first initiator of the mosque construction, Prof. Dr. H. Fasich, Apt., and the head of production Drs. Ec. Haryanto Basyuni, pushed the button together to sound the siren which officially opened the artistic building in Campus C UNAIR Jl. Mulyorejo Surabaya.

The mosque was opened to welcome the holy month, Ramadhan, so it can be used for worships. There were UNAIR officials, hundreds of alumni, donators, employees and students of UNAIR. After the official ceremony, it was followed with Friday prayer with sermon from Ustadz Drs. H. Taufik AB.

According to Drs. Ec. Haryanto Basyuni, who is the head of IKA UNAIR, the first idea was from Prof. Dr. H. Fasich, Apt., UNAIR Rector term 2006-2015 in 2014. Then it was discussed further with the head of  IKA-UA and East java Governor, who both agreed and the funding will be from UNAIR alumni.

”It was a great idea, for our preparation in the afterlife,” said Haryanto quoted “Pakde” Karwo met in an event in Gresik. The process was very fast, then on December 31 2014, the first foundation of the mosque was laid. At that time, the mosque was predicted to spend Rp 25 billions in two years of construction.

“But alhamdulillah because of our hardwork, the construction did not need two years to be finished. Only 17 months and the fund did not reach 25 billions, but only 17 billions,” said the businessman, FEB UNAIR alumnus.

After the construction commenced, donations were received from alumni, either private or faculty donations, IKA representatives, reducted wage donation every month also from the students and other donations.

”Without hardwork and donations from all friends, maybe our mosque will not stand here,” said Haryanto moved by the atmosphere and tears shed from his eyes.

The Head of IKA UNAIR Prof. Dr. M. Hatta Ali expressed his gratitude to any alumni who donated and hoped that it became their proof of love to the alma mater and the mosque can be used appropriately. So “Ulul Azmi” mosque is dedicated by the alumni for the civitas academica UNAIR and the wider society.

”A mosque is like a star in the sky, it shines to all of us,” said Prof. M Hatta Ali, who is also the Head of Indonesian Supreme, while expressing gratitudes and thanks that the construction was finished earlier than prediction.

UNAIR Rector Prof. M Nasih in his address hoped that this facility can be a part of UNAIR service to the nation and the country. Therefore he expressed gratitude to all alumni for their extraordinary contribution. “Especially Pak Haryanto, I knew well he had overseen this project 24/7,”said UNAIR Rector.

“Ulul ‘Azmi” presence hopefully will inspire us to overcome any competitions, as a spirit, determination and patience through extraordinary consistency.

”We hoped that this mosque is like Noah with his ark, overcame the great flood, like Ibrahim succeeded in destroying the infidels’ idols, also as if Moses defeated the Pharaoh. All of those will guide us to civilization with excellent character,” said Prof. Nasih ended his address. (*)
