UNAIR NEWS – The lay-out of Faculty of Medicine (FK) Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) in Campus A A Jl. Prof. Dr. Moestopo Surabaya, since the beginning of May 2016 has been rearranged. The entry point to Dean office, Financial Unit or other units in the main building of NIAS (Nederlands Indische Artsen School) is no longer from the back corridor but front the front corridor. The access door to FK UNAIR has been returned to its original position during NIAS era long time ago.
”Gradually, with its funding support, we are going to functionalize all the front access doors, not from the back. It has a deep meaning, that to get into FK UNAIR must take the front door, not the ‘back door’. You know the philosophy. Furthermore, to strengthen its status as cultural heritage of Surabaya, so we try our best to return it back to its original condition,” said the Dean of FK UNAIR Prof. Dr. Soetojo, dr., Sp.U., to UNAIR NEWS, on Tuesday, May 17.
It is believed that it will not be difficult to return the access doors of the services along the front corridor because the old doors and windows were are still strong and complete. They just need to be reinstalled and readjusted the inside. More time and capital effort might be needed to reinstalled the air conditioner (AC) which all this time installed at the top of front corridor to be installed at the back corridor.
”Long time ago, students who have business with the administrations or finance, such as paying tuition fee, used this barred window,” added the professor of Urology FK UNAIR while showing an old big window attached in Vice Dean II room.
He does not know exactly who moved the access door to officials room and other units from the front corridor (NIAS era) to the back corridor. When Prof. Soetojo was Vice Dean III from 2006-2010, even in the previous FK leadership, the door access was already at the back corridor.
The rearranging is still ongoing and the rooms in the main building have not been all returned to its NIAS era condition. It will be done gradually. The access doors from the back corridor are not closed all for sure for the staff access at the back such as when they want to go to the bathroom, musala, car park, and other places.
In the effort to return this access door, they do not need reference from old pictures which shows NIAS era building plan. For him, professors and senior lecturers’ stories are enough for references.
One more thing to consider later is the gardening section in front of the access doors will be revitalized. It is needed to show the greener condition.
”Because it is the front part of FK UNAIR then it should be managed as well and green as possible, including two plants on the right and left of Garuda Muka statue. They should be improved and looked after in a better way,” said Prof. Soetojo. (*)
