UNAIR NEWS – Acknowledgement on an individual’s positive contributions should be realized in a real appreciation and honor. This time, Faculty of Medicine (FK) realized its appreciation to a distinguished professor on Obstetrics and Gynecology who is also the world’s preeclampsia expert.
The ceremony of visiting professor award was bestowed to Prof. Gustaaf Albert Dekker, MD., PhD., FDCOG., FRANZCOG from The University of Adelaide, Australia, in FKUA Hall, on May 17. It was attended by UNAIR Vice Rector III , Prof. Ir. Amin Alamsjah, M.Si., Ph.D, Dean of FK UNAIR Prof. Soetojo, dr., Sp.U (K), FK UNAIR officials, Head of Obstetrics and Gynecology Department FK UNAIR – RSUD Dr. Soetomo, also FK UNAIR civitas academica.
Dean of FK UNAIR Prof. Soetojo said that the ceremony to award the visiting professor has been done for few times since 2007. From 29 Departments of FK UNAIR, some of them have done it.
“We hope it will inspire other departments to hold similar event,” said Prof. Soetojo.
Head of Obstetrics and Gynecology FK UNAIR – RSUD Dr. Soetomo Dr. dr. Hendy Hendarto, Sp.OG (K) stated that Prof. Dekker all this time has made a lot of positive contributions especially on obstetrics and gynecology.
Dr. Hendy added that Prof. Dekker’s spirit was not only showed in academic collaborations only but also in community service activity. “He showed enthusiasm to be a consultant and directly oversaw how Maternal and Infant Mortality Control program (PENAKIB) became the pilot project of Obstetrics and Gynecology Department in Mulyorejo and Madura,” said dr. Hendy.
Prof. Dekker who was born on August 7, 1955 expressed his pleasure and was a little nervousness during the ceremony of visiting professor award in FK UNAIR. “I am honored to be a part of this collaboration between the universities. I believe this collaboration can give more benefits to students or civitas academica,” said Prof. Dekker during his scientific oration, “Our Medical Student in Surabaya and Adelaide, and The Future of Our Specialty”.
Prof. Dekker is a clinical director of Women and Children’s Division in Nothern Adelaide Local Health Network (RS Lyell McEwin and Modbury) as well as a professor on Obstetrics and Gynecology at The University of Adelaide. He was graduated from Medical Education of Leiden University in 1978 with cumlaude achievement.
This visiting professor award was a realization of FK UNAIR and the University of Adelaide which has been established for 14 years. The collaboration on Fetomaternal Division of Obstetrics and Gynecology Department FK UNAIR was initiated by Prof. Dr. H. Erry Gumilar D, dr., Sp.OG(K) and Prof Dekker. Their personal relationship started long before the MoU was signed.
At first, Prof. Dekker was invited as a speaker in an event of Fetomaternal division. Then he supervised some of the doctoral students and taught in specialist program. Prof. Dekker is known to be active in making teaching syllabi and guidebooks for the students.
After being awarded as FK UNAIR visiting professor, Prof. Dekker planned to continue his research on preeclampsia with other researchers. This time he is going to focus on the correlation between preeclampsia and young women with low cost living condition. Prof. Dekker with researchers of FK UNAIR has published more than 90 researches.
