UNAIR NEWS – To be a best student at university level is quite an achievement for Amal Arifi Hidayat. Amal was named as the best student for October 2015 with GPA 3.64. This June, Amal will compete for the best student at national level held by General Directorate of Higher Education (Kemenristek Dikti).
Amal has tried to be the best student at UNAIR for a few times. The student tried when he was in his third semester and in the first place at faculty level. In his fifth semester, he was named as the second place at university level. In his seventh semester, he became the first at university level and can compete at national level.
Even though he has tried it for few times, he said that he is not obsessed with it. But he admitted that it was an invaluable experience to be one.
“In my opinion, it is not like any other competitions. It is a form of appreciation and rewards as during the selection process, achievements made are considered. To be the best student is not an obsession but it was an unforgettable experience. I want to make UNAIR better and inspire many people,” said Amal.
Now, Amal is getting ready and preparing his scientific paper for the competition. The theme for Dikti’s Best Student 2016 competition is ‘Inovasi untuk Daya Saing Bangsa (Innovation for Nation’s competitiveness)’. Amal has an idea to create a kind of bacteria which attacks other antibiotic resistant bacteria.
From his experience at campus and at work, not a few patients in Dr.Soetomo General Hospital were resistant to antibiotic. It makes the medical expect to give the optimal treatment to patients as antibiotic discovery is slower that the resistant bacteria’s development. If it keeps happening, the condition will affect people’s productivity and economy.
“There is a bacteria, call it zombie bacteria. It can eat other bacteria. I am maximizing this bacteria’s ability by changing its genetic so that it will attack the resistant bacteria,” said the student born on December 26 1996.
Besides preparing a scientific paper, he is also making a video clip illustrating his idea from the paper.
To Be a Doctor
Not few children said that they wanted to be a doctor when they grow up. So did Amal, when he was asked, Amal had wanted to be a doctor when he was at elementary school. For him, the profession as doctor is like killing two birds with one stone.
“When I was at kindergarten I wanted to be an astronaut, but it was difficult to be one. I do have passion in medical field. A doctor profession makes us help people,” said Amal who wanted to be a specialist on Internal Medicine.
At this moment, Amal is having an internship at RSDS. Yet, he has not been graduated as the normal bachelor. Amal said that he postpone his graduation for the national competition and brings UNAIR great name.
Good luck, Amal! (*)
